Victoria Fresh Fish Farm Expansion
Story
From a Small Pond to a Regional Vision
Jina langu ni Jomo Ochieng, and I am a fish farmer and aquaculture entrepreneur based right on the shores of Lake Victoria in Dunga Beach, Kisumu County. Growing up in a family of artisanal fishermen, I witnessed firsthand how overfishing and unpredictable weather patterns depleted our great lake's natural fish stocks. Traditional open-lake fishing is no longer reliable or environmentally sustainable for our future generations.
Four years ago, I decided to take matters into my own hands. With savings from my career in agricultural extension services and a small microloan, I started Victoria Fresh Fish Farm with just two earthen ponds. Today, we have grown to six operational earthen ponds and three floating cage units in sheltered bays, producing high-quality Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) for local markets in Kisumu, Kakamega, and as far as Nairobi.
The Challenge and Our Opportunity
Demand for fresh, locally-sourced fish in Kenya is skyrocketing. However, our current production capacity is bottlenecked by our infrastructure. We are operating with semi-manual feeding routines, an unreliable fingerling nursery phase, and a lack of cold-chain storage. During peak harvesting seasons, we often have to sell our fish quickly at lower farm-gate prices because we lack proper freezing and holding facilities to negotiate better market rates.
We have spent the last six months perfecting our water quality management, stocking density, and commercial feeding conversion ratios (FCR). We are now ready to scale up. Expansion will not only increase our yield by 300% but will also allow us to employ five more young people from the Dunga Beach community, training them in modern aquaculture techniques.
How We Will Use the Funds
We are raising KES 1,800,000 to execute a precise, milestone-driven expansion plan over the next four months. Every shilling raised will go directly into capital infrastructure and production inputs:
Pond Excavation & Lining (KES 450,000): Expanding 4 new earthen ponds and installing heavy-duty HDPE liners to prevent seepage and conserve water.
Cage Aquaculture Units (KES 380,000): Fabricating and deploying 2 additional high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floating fish cages in deeper lake waters.
Fingerlings & Feed Stock (KES 420,000): Purchasing 20,000 certified all-male mono-sex tilapia fingerlings and high-protein commercial floating feeds to optimize growth rates.
Solar Water & Aeration (KES 250,000): Installing solar-powered water pumps and paddlewheel aerators to maintain optimal dissolved oxygen levels across all production units.
Cold Storage & Logistics (KES 300,000): Acquiring a solar-powered chest freezer unit and partnering with local refrigerated transport for safe, fresh market delivery.
Why Fish Farming Matters in Kenya
Aquaculture is the future of Kenya's food security. By shifting pressure away from depleted wild stocks in Lake Victoria and producing fish sustainably through controlled farming, we protect the ecosystem while providing vital, affordable protein to Kenyan households.
Join Us in Building a Sustainable Future
Whether you can contribute KES 500, KES 5,000, or simply share this campaign with your network, your support means the world to us. Together, we can build a resilient, locally-owned agricultural business that creates jobs, feeds families, and proves that modern aquaculture can thrive right here in Western Kenya.
Asante sana for your generosity and belief in our vision. Karibu sana to visit Victoria Fresh Fish Farm whenever you are in Kisumu!
