Story

Several years ago, we received a request from a local school looking for a manufacturer that could produce quality uniforms within a tight deadline. After completing that order successfully, another school followed, then a hotel requested staff uniforms, and soon afterwards several fashion brands approached us to manufacture their clothing collections. We quickly realised that Kenya has no shortage of talented designers or growing clothing brands. The challenge is that many struggle to find reliable local manufacturers capable of producing high-quality garments consistently and at scale.

UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing was established to bridge that gap by providing professional garment manufacturing services for fashion brands, schools, hotels, hospitals, retailers, corporate organisations, and entrepreneurs launching their own clothing labels. Our factory produces school uniforms, corporate wear, workwear, fashion apparel, sportswear, promotional clothing, hospitality uniforms, protective garments, and customised textile products. Alongside manufacturing, we also provide pattern development, fabric sourcing, embroidery, screen printing, quality control, and product finishing services that help brands bring their ideas to market.

I am Brian Kamau, and clothing manufacturing has been part of my life since childhood. My mother worked as a tailor, and I spent countless afternoons watching garments take shape from rolls of fabric into finished products. That early exposure inspired me to study textile engineering before working with several apparel manufacturers across East Africa. Throughout my career, I repeatedly saw talented Kenyan designers forced to outsource production overseas because local factories lacked sufficient equipment or production capacity. Every outsourced order represented jobs, skills, and economic opportunities leaving our country. I became convinced that Kenya needed more modern garment manufacturing businesses capable of competing on quality, efficiency, and reliability.

We launched UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing inside a modest production workshop with a small team of experienced tailors and a handful of industrial sewing machines. During our first months, every order required careful planning. We personally inspected every garment, delivered finished products ourselves, and regularly worked late into the evening to ensure customers received quality work on time. Building trust within the fashion industry required consistency above everything else because every garment leaving our factory represented not only our reputation but also the reputation of the brands we served.

Today, UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing works with fashion startups, established clothing brands, educational institutions, hospitality businesses, healthcare providers, retailers, government organisations, and corporate clients throughout Kenya. Our customers appreciate our commitment to craftsmanship, transparent communication, dependable delivery schedules, and continuous quality improvement. Many entrepreneurs who began with small production runs now rely on us as their primary manufacturing partner as their businesses continue expanding.

One achievement that brings us particular pride is our apprenticeship programme for young tailors and fashion graduates. Every year, aspiring garment technicians join our factory to learn industrial sewing, garment construction, quality assurance, production planning, and textile manufacturing techniques under experienced supervisors. Several former apprentices have gone on to establish successful tailoring businesses or secure full-time employment within Kenya's growing apparel industry. Investing in technical skills development remains one of the most meaningful contributions we can make to our community.

Despite increasing demand, our existing production equipment has become the primary limitation preventing further growth. Several large manufacturing contracts require production volumes that exceed the capacity of our current machinery. Some specialised garments also require equipment we do not yet own, forcing us to subcontract portions of production that could otherwise be completed entirely within our own factory. These limitations reduce efficiency, extend delivery times, and restrict our ability to compete for larger commercial opportunities.

Modern garment manufacturing increasingly depends upon specialised industrial equipment that improves precision, speed, consistency, and product quality. Automated cutting machines, embroidery systems, industrial pressing equipment, digital pattern technology, and specialised sewing machines significantly increase productivity while reducing production waste. Investing in modern manufacturing equipment will allow us to expand production capacity while maintaining the quality standards that have become central to our business.

Following consultations with textile engineers, manufacturing consultants, equipment suppliers, fashion designers, and financial advisers, we developed an expansion strategy focused primarily on upgrading our manufacturing equipment. Rather than opening additional factories immediately, we believe strengthening our existing production facility will generate the greatest long-term value for both our customers and employees.

We are seeking KSh 16,800,000 to purchase modern garment manufacturing equipment that will significantly expand the production capacity of UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing. Every shilling raised through this campaign will be invested directly into advanced manufacturing technology that supports Kenyan fashion brands, creates skilled employment, and strengthens local textile production.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Purchase additional industrial sewing machines, automated fabric cutting equipment, embroidery machines, digital pattern systems, industrial pressing equipment, and garment finishing technology that improve production efficiency and product quality.

  • Expand specialised production capabilities for sportswear, corporate uniforms, protective clothing, hospitality garments, and premium fashion collections requiring advanced manufacturing techniques.

  • Recruit additional garment technicians, quality assurance specialists, production supervisors, machine operators, and maintenance engineers to support increased manufacturing capacity.

  • Strengthen apprenticeship programmes that provide practical training for young tailors, fashion graduates, and textile professionals entering Kenya's manufacturing sector.

  • Improve production planning, inventory management, and quality control systems that ensure consistent manufacturing standards across every customer order.

  • Increase local sourcing of fabrics, trims, packaging materials, and production supplies from trusted Kenyan suppliers whenever possible.

  • Develop dedicated sample development and product innovation facilities that help emerging fashion designers transform creative ideas into commercially successful clothing collections.

The impact of this investment reaches far beyond one clothing factory. Every additional garment manufactured locally supports cotton producers, textile suppliers, logistics companies, retailers, designers, fashion entrepreneurs, educational institutions, and the many businesses connected throughout Kenya's textile value chain. Expanding domestic manufacturing also creates skilled employment while reducing dependence on imported clothing products.

Our long-term vision is to establish UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing as one of East Africa's leading garment manufacturers, recognised for exceptional quality, dependable production, technical excellence, and meaningful support for local fashion entrepreneurship. We believe African fashion deserves world-class manufacturing capabilities built here on the continent by highly skilled local professionals.

Looking back, it is inspiring to remember that our factory began with a handful of sewing machines, determined employees, and a belief that Kenyan manufacturing could compete through craftsmanship rather than scale alone. Every customer who trusted us with their brand, every employee who embraced our commitment to quality, and every apprentice who chose to build a career in garment manufacturing has contributed to the company we proudly operate today.

Your support for this campaign represents much more than purchasing manufacturing equipment. You are investing in local industry, technical education, employment creation, entrepreneurship, sustainable manufacturing, and the continued growth of Kenya's fashion sector. Together, we can strengthen local apparel production while helping talented designers and businesses bring their products to market with confidence.

On behalf of our production team, apprentices, designers, customers, suppliers, employees, and families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, encouragement, and support. We would be honoured to have you become part of the next chapter of UrbanThreads Apparel Manufacturing.
