Story

My name is David Omondi, and I am the founder of Lakeview Aqua Farms, a fish farming business based in Kisumu County, Kenya. Growing up near Lake Victoria, fishing was a way of life for many families, including mine. However, over the years I watched fish catches become increasingly unpredictable as demand grew and natural fish stocks declined. I realized that if communities were going to continue enjoying affordable, nutritious fish while protecting the lake's ecosystem, aquaculture would have to become part of the solution. That realization inspired me to establish a fish farming business that combines sustainable production with reliable supply for local markets.

I started with only four earthen ponds on a small piece of leased land and stocked them with tilapia fingerlings purchased from a government hatchery. During the first year, every challenge felt overwhelming. Heavy rains damaged pond embankments, feed prices increased unexpectedly, and I lost an entire batch of fingerlings because I lacked proper water quality monitoring equipment. Instead of giving up, I sought guidance from fisheries officers, attended training workshops, and spent countless evenings studying modern aquaculture techniques. Every setback taught me something valuable that continues to shape how the farm operates today.

As our production improved, restaurants, hotels, fish traders, supermarkets, and individual households began buying directly from us because they appreciated the freshness and consistent quality of our fish. Unlike unpredictable wild catches, our harvests follow carefully planned production schedules, allowing customers to place advance orders with confidence. We also process and package fish for selected retail outlets, helping us reach consumers who prefer ready-to-cook products. The relationships we have built over the years are based on reliability, honesty, and maintaining high production standards.

Lakeview Aqua Farms has also become an important partner for surrounding communities. We purchase fish feed from local suppliers, employ workers from nearby villages, and encourage young people to consider aquaculture as a viable business opportunity. Several aspiring fish farmers regularly visit our ponds to learn about stocking densities, feeding programs, water management, and disease prevention. Sharing knowledge has become just as rewarding as selling fish because it strengthens the entire local aquaculture industry.

Despite this progress, our current infrastructure has reached its limit. Our ponds are fully utilized throughout the year, making it impossible to significantly increase production without expanding. During peak demand periods such as festive seasons, hotels and supermarkets frequently request quantities that exceed our available stock. Declining these orders not only reduces our revenue but also creates opportunities for competitors to replace us. We know the market exists; what we lack is the production capacity needed to serve it consistently.

The business has grown responsibly through years of disciplined reinvestment. Every pond, pump, storage shed, and processing improvement has been financed from profits generated by previous harvests. While this approach has protected us from excessive debt, inflation, increasing feed costs, and higher transportation expenses have slowed our ability to save for major expansion. We have reached a stage where external support will allow us to seize opportunities that would otherwise remain beyond our reach for several more years.

Our expansion is driven by confirmed customer demand rather than speculation. We have received interest from supermarket chains, institutional caterers, schools, and regional distributors seeking dependable supplies of fresh tilapia. We are confident that increasing production now will strengthen our business while contributing to Kenya's growing demand for locally farmed fish. This campaign will enable us to move from a small producer into a larger commercial operation without compromising the quality that our customers value.

We are seeking KSh 5,750,000 to expand our fish farming operation, construct additional ponds, improve production systems, and increase the supply of sustainable, high-quality fish across western Kenya.

  • Construct six additional commercial fish ponds with improved drainage and water control systems.

  • Purchase high-quality tilapia fingerlings to stock the expanded ponds.

  • Buy fish feed in bulk to reduce production costs and improve profitability.

  • Install modern aeration equipment and water quality monitoring systems to improve fish health and survival rates.

  • Expand our cold storage and processing facilities to handle larger harvest volumes.

  • Purchase insulated transport equipment to maintain product freshness during deliveries.

  • Recruit and train additional farm workers in fish husbandry, harvesting, processing, and quality assurance.

  • Maintain sufficient working capital for utilities, pond maintenance, veterinary services, and operational expenses during the expansion period.

Our implementation plan has been carefully developed. During the first two months after funding, we will construct the additional ponds, install water management systems, and complete supporting infrastructure. The third month will focus on stocking fingerlings, staff recruitment, and equipment installation. As the fish mature, we will gradually increase production while strengthening partnerships with wholesalers and retailers. Within twelve months, we expect to more than double our annual production capacity while maintaining the quality standards that have earned customer trust.

The benefits of this expansion extend beyond our farm. Increased fish production will strengthen food security, provide consumers with more affordable protein, and reduce pressure on natural fisheries by increasing the availability of responsibly farmed fish. We will also purchase larger volumes of feed, equipment, and transportation services from local businesses, contributing to broader economic growth throughout the region.

This project will create at least sixteen new full-time jobs, including pond technicians, processing staff, quality control assistants, drivers, sales personnel, and administrative employees. We also plan to continue mentoring aspiring fish farmers by organizing practical farm visits and knowledge-sharing sessions that encourage sustainable aquaculture throughout the community.

Looking ahead, my vision is to make Lakeview Aqua Farms one of Kenya's most respected aquaculture businesses while remaining committed to environmental responsibility, ethical business practices, and community development. In the coming years, we hope to establish our own hatchery, introduce value-added fish products, and expand distribution into neighboring counties while continuing to support local farmers and young entrepreneurs entering the aquaculture sector.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and consider supporting our campaign. Your contribution represents an investment in sustainable agriculture, food security, local employment, and responsible entrepreneurship. Every contribution brings us one step closer to expanding our farm and creating lasting opportunities for our employees, customers, and surrounding communities. On behalf of my family and the entire Lakeview Aqua Farms team, thank you for believing in our vision and helping us build a stronger future together.
