Story

My name is Faith Okoro, and I am the founder of Okoro Agro Processing Industries, a Nigerian agro-processing company committed to transforming locally grown cassava into high-quality food and industrial products. Our business produces garri, high-quality cassava flour, fufu flour, cassava starch, and packaged food products that are supplied to wholesalers, supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, food processors, and export buyers. Every bag of finished product that leaves our factory represents the hard work of Nigerian farmers, the dedication of our employees, and our belief that agriculture can become one of the strongest drivers of economic growth when supported by local manufacturing.

I grew up in a farming community where cassava was more than just another crop—it was the foundation of many families' livelihoods. My parents cultivated cassava for decades, yet despite working tirelessly throughout the year, their earnings remained unpredictable. During harvest seasons, prices often collapsed because too many farmers harvested at the same time, while poor storage and limited processing facilities meant large quantities of fresh cassava deteriorated before they could be sold. Watching farmers lose income despite producing abundant harvests left a lasting impression on me.

After earning my degree in Agricultural Engineering, I accepted a position at a food processing company where I learned every stage of commercial food production. I gained practical experience in quality assurance, food safety, machinery operation, production planning, packaging, and supply chain management. More importantly, I realized that Nigeria imported significant quantities of processed food products despite having abundant agricultural resources capable of supporting domestic manufacturing.

That realization inspired me to establish Okoro Agro Processing Industries. Rather than simply buying and selling agricultural produce, I wanted to build a company that added value locally by converting raw cassava into finished products with longer shelf lives and greater commercial value. My vision was to create reliable markets for farmers while supplying food manufacturers and consumers with consistently high-quality Nigerian-made products.

The journey began six years ago inside a modest rented warehouse with a small peeling machine, a manual grating system, basic drying equipment, and only a handful of employees. During those first months, I personally supervised production, negotiated with farmers, inspected deliveries, managed finances, coordinated transportation, and even loaded delivery vehicles alongside my staff. Every order required careful planning because our production capacity was extremely limited.

The first year tested every aspect of my determination. Equipment breakdowns occurred regularly, electricity supply was inconsistent, and convincing wholesalers to purchase products from a newly established processor required patience and persistence. Several retailers preferred imported alternatives because they believed locally processed products lacked consistency. Instead of lowering our standards, we invested every available resource into improving product quality, food safety procedures, packaging, and customer service.

Slowly, our reputation began to grow. Bakers appreciated the consistency of our cassava flour, supermarkets responded positively to our improved packaging, and food manufacturers recognized the reliability of our supply. As customer confidence increased, so did demand. More farmers approached us looking for dependable buyers, while wholesalers requested larger production volumes than we could comfortably supply.

Today, Okoro Agro Processing Industries partners with more than 800 smallholder farmers across several agricultural communities. We purchase fresh cassava roots directly from farmers at fair market prices, reducing their dependence on middlemen while creating more predictable income opportunities. Our factory processes thousands of kilograms of cassava every week, supplying customers throughout Nigeria while supporting employment across farming, transportation, manufacturing, warehousing, administration, and distribution.

One of the achievements I value most is the trust we have built with farming communities. We regularly organize agricultural extension programmes that help farmers improve crop yields, adopt better harvesting techniques, and reduce post-harvest losses. When our business grows, our farmers grow with us, creating a partnership that benefits everyone throughout the agricultural value chain.

However, our success has also created new challenges. Customer demand has increased substantially over the past two years, particularly from commercial food manufacturers seeking larger, long-term supply agreements. Unfortunately, our current production line is operating close to maximum capacity. During harvest seasons, we often receive more cassava than we can process quickly, forcing us to reject deliveries that farmers have worked months to produce. Those are some of the most difficult conversations we have because every rejected delivery represents lost income for farming families.

Our existing processing equipment was purchased when our business operated on a much smaller scale. Although it has served us well, manual handling still accounts for too much of our production process. Peeling, drying, milling, packaging, and material handling all take longer than they should, limiting daily output and increasing production costs. We also lack sufficient storage facilities for both raw materials and finished products, reducing our ability to respond quickly to large customer orders.

We have spent the past year working with engineers, agricultural consultants, and financial advisers to develop a practical expansion strategy. Rather than expanding too quickly, we intend to modernize our processing line with automated equipment that increases efficiency while maintaining strict food safety standards. This investment will allow us to purchase more cassava from farmers, manufacture larger production volumes, reduce waste, and compete for contracts that are currently beyond our capacity.

We are seeking ₦36,500,000 to expand our agro-processing facility, install modern automated production equipment, and strengthen our ability to transform Nigerian agricultural produce into high-quality finished products. Every naira invested through this campaign will contribute directly to stronger local manufacturing, improved food security, and greater opportunities for farming communities.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Purchase automated cassava washing, peeling, grating, drying, milling, and packaging equipment that significantly increases daily production capacity while improving product consistency.

  • Construct additional warehouse facilities for raw cassava, finished products, and packaging materials to improve inventory management and reduce post-harvest losses.

  • Install energy-efficient drying systems and backup power infrastructure that ensure uninterrupted production despite electricity challenges.

  • Acquire forklifts, conveyor systems, and material handling equipment that improve operational efficiency and workplace safety.

  • Recruit additional production operators, maintenance technicians, quality assurance officers, warehouse personnel, logistics staff, and administrative employees to support the expanded facility.

  • Expand farmer training programmes covering sustainable farming practices, improved cassava varieties, soil management, and harvest planning.

  • Strengthen laboratory testing and food safety systems that ensure every product consistently meets national and international quality standards.

The impact of this expansion extends well beyond our factory. By increasing production capacity, we expect to purchase substantially larger quantities of cassava from farming communities throughout the region, creating more reliable incomes for hundreds of additional farming families. Increased manufacturing will also create permanent employment opportunities while reducing food waste and strengthening Nigeria's domestic food processing industry.

Our long-term vision is to build one of Nigeria's leading agro-processing companies while demonstrating that value addition within agriculture creates greater economic opportunities than exporting raw commodities alone. Every bag of cassava flour produced locally represents additional jobs, increased industrial activity, stronger food security, and greater confidence in Nigerian manufacturing.

Looking back at where this journey began—a small rented warehouse with basic machinery and a handful of determined employees—I remain humbled by how much has been accomplished through perseverance, discipline, and the trust of our customers and farming partners. Every milestone reminds us that sustainable growth is possible when businesses invest in people as much as they invest in equipment.

Your support is much more than an investment in machinery. You are investing in Nigerian farmers, rural communities, local manufacturing, food security, employment creation, and the future of agriculture. Together, we can build an agro-processing company that creates lasting prosperity for thousands of families while showcasing the enormous potential of Nigerian agriculture.

On behalf of our employees, partner farmers, suppliers, customers, and our families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, your encouragement, and your support. We would be honoured to have you become part of the next chapter in the journey of Okoro Agro Processing Industries.
