Nomsa Beauty Studio
Story
My name is Nomsa Dlamini, and I am the owner of Nomsa Beauty Studio, a women’s hairdressing salon in Umlazi, Durban. I built the salon around a simple idea: women in my community should be able to receive professional hair services in a clean, welcoming environment without having to travel across the city or spend more than they can reasonably afford. Today, our salon provides natural hair care, braiding, protective styles, wig installation, relaxer services, washing, treatments and basic hair-product retail to women from Umlazi and surrounding communities.
I started working with hair while I was still young. My mother and older sisters often asked me to braid their hair for family occasions, and I gradually became known among friends and neighbours for taking my time and paying attention to detail. After finishing school, I completed practical beauty and hairdressing training and spent several years working in different salons. Those jobs taught me much more than styling. I learned how to manage customers, handle difficult appointments, calculate product costs and understand which services actually make a salon profitable.
In 2022, I decided to open my own salon after saving enough money to rent a small shop in a busy part of Umlazi. The first space had only two styling chairs and limited equipment. I purchased a basic hair dryer, washing basin, mirrors and essential styling tools using my savings. I started with a very small service menu because I could not afford to keep large amounts of hair products in stock. My first customers were neighbours, former clients and women referred by friends. Most of the early income went straight back into rent, supplies and equipment.
The salon gradually developed a loyal customer base. We now serve women of different ages, including students, office workers, mothers, small-business owners and brides preparing for important occasions. Braiding and protective styles are among our most requested services, but we also have regular customers who come for natural hair treatments, washing, styling, wig installation and maintenance. Some clients have remained with us since the first year, and referrals from existing customers continue to bring new people through our doors.
Our daily operations are handled by me and two assistants. Appointments are recorded manually, while walk-in customers are attended to whenever we have available space. Before opening, we prepare the workstations, check appointments and make sure the most frequently used products are available. During busy weekends, all three of us can be working continuously for several hours. I handle many of the more technical services and supervise the quality of work, while my assistants focus on braiding, washing, preparation and customer support.
The biggest challenge we face is limited capacity. Our current salon has only a few styling stations, and during busy periods we have to turn customers away or ask them to return another day. This is particularly common around weekends, school holidays, weddings and festive periods. We have also lost potential customers because our equipment is not sufficient to provide several services simultaneously. A customer may have to wait for a dryer or washing station to become available before her appointment can continue.
Another challenge is the rising cost of professional hair products and extensions. We use shampoos, conditioners, treatments, styling gels, oils, disinfectants and other consumables every day. Purchasing small quantities is expensive, but our current cash flow does not always allow us to buy in larger quantities. Hair extensions and related products are also increasingly expensive, making it difficult to maintain a wide selection without tying up too much money in stock.
Financially, the salon has been funded almost entirely through my personal savings and income generated by the business. I have reinvested a significant portion of our earnings into equipment, rent, products and small improvements. I have deliberately grown slowly because I wanted to avoid taking on debt that could become difficult to repay during quieter months. The business is generating steady income, but the current space and equipment limit how much revenue we can earn from the demand already available.
We are requesting R1,260,000 to expand Nomsa Beauty Studio into a larger and better-equipped women’s hair salon. The funding will allow us to serve more customers, introduce additional services, improve the customer experience and create employment opportunities for women who want to build careers in the beauty industry.
R480,000 for salon renovation and expansion: We will secure and renovate a larger space, install appropriate lighting, improve the interior layout and create separate areas for styling, washing, wig services and customer waiting.
R250,000 for professional salon equipment: This will cover additional styling chairs, hair dryers, washing basins, hood dryers, workstations, mirrors and other essential equipment needed to increase our daily capacity.
R180,000 for hair products and extensions: We will build a larger inventory of professional products, braiding hair, wigs, treatments, conditioners, styling products and other items that customers regularly request.
R120,000 for staff recruitment and training: We will recruit two additional stylists and provide practical training to ensure that services remain consistent as the business expands.
R110,000 for retail display and stock systems: We will create a small retail section for hair-care products and introduce better inventory management so that popular products are replenished before they run out.
R70,000 for marketing and customer booking: We will improve our local advertising, create professional promotional materials and introduce a simple appointment-booking system to manage customer demand more efficiently.
R50,000 for operating reserve: This will provide working capital for utilities, cleaning supplies, minor repairs and unexpected operating expenses during the first months after expansion.
During the first month after receiving the funding, I will secure the new premises, complete the renovation plan and purchase the essential equipment. Existing customers will be informed about the expansion so that we can maintain their appointments during the transition. We will also begin recruiting additional stylists and establish clear service standards before the new space opens.
During months two and three, the expanded salon will begin operating with additional styling stations and a broader service menu. We will introduce structured appointment scheduling while continuing to accept selected walk-in customers. I also plan to create packages for customers who regularly combine washing, treatment and styling services. This should improve convenience for clients while increasing the average value of each appointment.
Within six months, my target is to increase the number of customers we can serve by at least 40 percent and increase monthly revenue by approximately 35 percent. The retail section should provide an additional source of income while making it easier for customers to continue caring for their hair at home using products recommended by our stylists.
The expansion will create at least four new jobs within the first year, including two full-time hair stylists and support positions as customer volume increases. I particularly want to create opportunities for young women who have completed basic hairdressing training but struggle to find stable employment. In the future, I would like experienced staff members to mentor newer stylists so that the salon becomes a place where practical skills are developed as well as a place where customers receive services.
My long-term vision is to build Nomsa Beauty Studio into a recognised local beauty brand with several branches across Durban. I want to eventually offer structured training for young women interested in hairdressing and beauty services, while developing our own range of carefully selected hair-care products. I also want the business to become known for reliable appointments, fair pricing, professional service and a genuine understanding of the different hair needs of South African women.
This salon represents more than a place where women come to have their hair done. For many of our customers, a salon appointment is part of preparing for work, attending a wedding, celebrating a birthday or simply taking time to feel confident about themselves. I want to build a space where customers feel respected and where the women working behind the chairs can earn a stable income from a skill they are proud of.
Thank you for taking the time to read about Nomsa Beauty Studio and consider supporting this campaign. Every contribution will help us create a larger salon, purchase professional equipment, employ more women and serve more customers from our community. I started this business with a few chairs, basic equipment and a belief that I could make a living from my skills. With the support of this campaign, I hope to turn that small beginning into a sustainable beauty business that creates opportunities for other women as well. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who contributes, shares our campaign or simply takes the time to believe in what we are building.
