Story

My name is Thabo Nkosi, and I am the founder of Nkosi Precision Engineering Works, a small manufacturing business based in South Africa that specializes in custom metal fabrication, precision machining, and industrial component manufacturing. What began as a one-man workshop has grown into a respected engineering business serving construction companies, agricultural businesses, mining contractors, and manufacturing firms that rely on us to produce high-quality components quickly and reliably.

Engineering has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father worked as a machine operator in a local factory, and from a young age I spent countless weekends watching him repair equipment, fabricate steel parts, and solve mechanical problems that many people thought were impossible. Those experiences taught me that engineering is about more than machines—it is about creating practical solutions that keep businesses running and communities growing.

After completing my technical training, I spent nearly twelve years working in different manufacturing plants across the country. During those years I gained valuable experience operating CNC machines, welding heavy steel structures, reading engineering drawings, and supervising production teams. While I enjoyed the work, I always dreamed of owning a workshop where quality, honesty, and customer service came before everything else.

That dream became reality seven years ago. Using my retirement savings, a small business loan, and every bit of confidence I could gather, I rented a modest industrial unit and purchased a few second-hand machines. The workshop consisted of one manual lathe, an aging milling machine, two welding stations, and a small compressor. There were only three of us during those early days. We handled quotations in the morning, fabricated parts throughout the day, and delivered finished jobs ourselves after sunset.

The first year was incredibly challenging. There were weeks when we had almost no orders, and every invoice mattered. Some months we questioned whether the business would survive. We repaired broken farm equipment, manufactured replacement parts that larger companies considered too small to bother with, and accepted almost any engineering job that allowed us to keep the workshop open. Every completed project helped us earn another recommendation, and slowly our customer base began to grow.

Today, Nkosi Precision Engineering Works employs skilled welders, machinists, apprentices, and administrative staff. Our workshop manufactures conveyor components, structural steel assemblies, agricultural machinery parts, safety barriers, brackets, machine housings, and custom-engineered products for businesses across several industries. Many of our customers have worked with us for years because they know we deliver quality workmanship, communicate honestly, and stand behind everything we produce.

One achievement that makes me particularly proud is our apprenticeship programme. Every year we provide practical training to young people who want to build careers in engineering and manufacturing. Many arrive with enthusiasm but little practical experience. By working alongside experienced machinists and fabricators, they develop valuable technical skills that improve their employment prospects while strengthening South Africa's manufacturing sector.

Despite how far we've come, our biggest obstacle today is no longer finding customers—it is keeping up with demand. Over the last eighteen months, enquiries have increased dramatically. Construction companies need fabricated steel structures, mining contractors require precision-machined replacement components, and agricultural businesses regularly request custom parts during harvest seasons. Unfortunately, our existing equipment is no longer capable of handling the volume or complexity of many of these projects.

Our workshop still relies heavily on machines that are more than twenty years old. While they have served us well, they require constant maintenance, operate much more slowly than modern equipment, and struggle to maintain the precision required for today's manufacturing standards. Machine breakdowns have become increasingly common, delaying production schedules and forcing us to work overtime simply to meet delivery deadlines.

Perhaps the most frustrating part of running the business today is turning away opportunities we know we could successfully complete if we had the right equipment. In recent months alone, we have declined several lucrative contracts because our current machinery simply cannot produce the required tolerances or production volumes within the client's timeline. Every declined contract represents lost revenue for our company, fewer working hours for our employees, and missed opportunities to grow South African manufacturing.

We have spent months carefully evaluating our next phase of growth. Rather than expanding too quickly, we want to invest in equipment that will increase productivity while maintaining the craftsmanship that built our reputation. Modern CNC technology will allow us to manufacture more complex components, improve production accuracy, reduce material waste, shorten delivery times, and compete for larger industrial contracts that are currently beyond our reach.

We are seeking R2,400,000 to modernize our engineering workshop with advanced manufacturing equipment that will transform our production capacity and position our business for long-term sustainable growth.

The funds raised through this campaign will be invested in the following:

  • Purchase a modern CNC machining centre capable of producing high-precision industrial components efficiently and consistently.

  • Acquire a CNC plasma cutting system to improve fabrication speed while reducing raw material waste.

  • Upgrade our welding equipment with industrial MIG and TIG systems that improve production quality and operator safety.

  • Install modern air compression, dust extraction, and workshop safety systems that create a healthier working environment.

  • Provide advanced technical training for our machinists and apprentices to ensure they can fully utilize the new equipment.

  • Expand our quality assurance department with precision measuring equipment that guarantees every manufactured component meets customer specifications.

  • Increase our raw material inventory so we can begin large manufacturing contracts without unnecessary production delays.

The impact of this investment will extend well beyond our workshop walls. With increased production capacity, we expect to create additional permanent jobs for machinists, welders, quality inspectors, logistics staff, and apprentices. We will also strengthen relationships with local suppliers, purchase more raw materials from South African businesses, and support industries that depend on reliable engineering services to keep operating efficiently.

Manufacturing has always been one of the foundations of a strong economy. Every machine repaired, every steel structure fabricated, and every precision component produced contributes to businesses that feed families, build infrastructure, transport goods, and create employment. Supporting a local engineering company means supporting an entire network of industries that rely on skilled manufacturing every single day.

Looking back at where this journey began—a tiny rented workshop with second-hand equipment—it is incredible to see how much has been achieved through perseverance and the trust of our customers. Every challenge has taught us something valuable, and every success has motivated us to keep improving. We firmly believe that our best years are still ahead of us.

Your contribution is not simply helping us purchase machinery. It is helping us create skilled jobs, train the next generation of engineers, strengthen local manufacturing, and prove that small South African businesses can compete through quality, innovation, and determination. Together, we can build a workshop that serves industry for decades to come.

On behalf of my family, my employees, and everyone whose livelihood depends on Nkosi Precision Engineering Works, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your support, your encouragement, and your belief in our vision for the future.
