Story

My name is Patrick Ndlovu, and I am the founder of Ndlovu Fresh Harvest Exporters, an agricultural business dedicated to connecting Zimbabwean farmers with both domestic and international markets through the production, grading, packaging, and export of fresh fruits and vegetables. Every shipment that leaves our packing facility represents the hard work of hundreds of farming families whose livelihoods depend on agriculture. Our mission has always been to ensure that their produce reaches customers in the best possible condition while creating sustainable income opportunities for rural communities.

I was born and raised in a farming family where agriculture was more than just an occupation—it was our way of life. My parents cultivated tomatoes, green beans, onions, butternuts, and leafy vegetables on a small piece of land that had been in our family for many years. From an early age, I understood both the beauty and the uncertainty of farming. One good season could transform a family's finances, while one poor harvest or one failed market could erase months of hard work.

As I grew older, I realized that producing crops was only one part of the challenge. The greatest problem many farmers faced was selling their produce at fair prices before it spoiled. During peak harvest periods, local markets quickly became saturated, forcing farmers to sell to middlemen at extremely low prices. Perfectly fresh produce was often wasted simply because there were not enough buyers or because transport and packaging systems were inadequate.

After completing my studies in agricultural economics, I spent several years working for a produce export company. There I learned about international food quality standards, cold chain management, export documentation, grading systems, and the strict requirements that foreign buyers expect from agricultural suppliers. I was amazed to discover that buyers in neighboring countries and overseas were actively looking for fresh produce that Zimbabwean farmers were already capable of growing. The missing link was a reliable business that could organize production, maintain quality, and manage the logistics required to reach those markets.

That realization inspired me to establish Ndlovu Fresh Harvest Exporters six years ago. I wanted to build a business that allowed farmers to focus on growing exceptional produce while we handled grading, packaging, quality control, transportation, and market access. My vision was not simply to create another produce trading company, but to become a long-term partner that helped farmers earn more stable and predictable incomes.

Starting the business required every resource I had. I invested my savings, secured a modest business loan, and rented a small warehouse that we converted into a basic produce collection and packing centre. During those early months, our operation was incredibly simple. We collected vegetables from fewer than twenty farmers, manually sorted every crate, packed orders by hand, and transported produce ourselves using a single refrigerated rental truck whenever one was available.

The first export shipment remains one of the proudest moments of my life. Although it consisted of only a small quantity of fresh vegetables, it proved that local farmers could successfully meet international quality standards when given the right support. That success encouraged more farmers to join our programme, and each successful shipment strengthened our reputation among both producers and buyers.

Today, Ndlovu Fresh Harvest Exporters works with more than 450 smallholder farmers across several agricultural regions. Together we supply tomatoes, peas, sugar snap peas, baby corn, green beans, chillies, citrus fruits, avocados, butternuts, leafy vegetables, and seasonal produce to supermarkets, wholesalers, hotels, restaurants, food processors, and export customers throughout Southern Africa. We provide farmers with production planning advice, quality requirements, harvest scheduling, and market information that allows them to make informed business decisions before planting begins.

One of the aspects of our business that gives me the greatest satisfaction is seeing farmers become financially independent. Many of the families we work with have invested in irrigation systems, improved farming equipment, children's education, and expanded production because they now have reliable access to better-paying markets. Watching entire communities benefit from stronger agricultural value chains reminds me why this business exists.

Despite these achievements, we are now facing one of the biggest challenges in our company's history. Customer demand has increased significantly, particularly from regional buyers seeking larger and more consistent shipments. Unfortunately, our current infrastructure limits how much produce we can process each day. During peak harvest periods, farmers often arrive with more produce than we can grade and pack before quality begins to decline. Turning away produce from hardworking farmers is one of the most difficult decisions we face because it means lost income for them and missed opportunities for our business.

Our packing facility was designed when we served only a fraction of our current customer base. Manual grading processes reduce productivity, while limited cold storage capacity forces us to dispatch products more quickly than is sometimes practical. We also lack modern packaging equipment capable of producing export-quality retail packaging efficiently. These limitations make it difficult to compete for larger supply agreements that require greater production volumes and consistent year-round delivery.

Transportation has become another significant challenge. Although we coordinate logistics carefully, our dependence on third-party refrigerated transport limits scheduling flexibility and increases operating costs. Owning additional refrigerated vehicles would allow us to collect produce more efficiently, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen relationships with both farmers and buyers.

After months of consultation with agricultural specialists, logistics experts, and export partners, we developed a carefully planned expansion strategy focused on improving every stage of our operation. Our objective is not simply to process more produce, but to improve quality, reduce waste, increase farmer participation, and strengthen Zimbabwe's position as a trusted supplier of fresh agricultural products.

We are seeking $1,750,000 to expand our produce packing and export facility, invest in modern cold chain infrastructure, and strengthen our ability to connect Zimbabwean farmers with profitable domestic and international markets. Every dollar raised through this campaign will directly support investments that improve agricultural productivity, reduce food waste, and create sustainable economic opportunities throughout the farming communities we serve.

The funds raised through this campaign will be invested in the following:

  • Construct a larger modern produce grading and packing facility designed to meet international food safety and export standards.

  • Purchase automated grading, washing, sorting, and packaging equipment that increases processing efficiency while maintaining product quality.

  • Install expanded refrigerated cold storage facilities that preserve freshness and reduce post-harvest losses before shipment.

  • Purchase additional refrigerated trucks to improve produce collection from farms and strengthen distribution to local and export markets.

  • Recruit additional quality assurance officers, warehouse personnel, logistics coordinators, packaging staff, and export administrators.

  • Expand farmer training programmes covering crop planning, food safety certification, sustainable farming practices, and export quality requirements.

  • Implement modern inventory management and export traceability systems that improve transparency and strengthen buyer confidence.

The impact of this expansion extends well beyond our business. By increasing processing capacity, we will purchase significantly larger volumes of produce from smallholder farmers, providing more stable incomes for hundreds of rural families. Additional cold storage and improved logistics will reduce food waste, allowing more of every harvest to reach paying customers instead of being lost after harvest. Export growth will also generate valuable foreign exchange while strengthening Zimbabwe's agricultural reputation in regional and international markets.

We anticipate creating dozens of new permanent jobs in warehouse operations, quality assurance, transport, administration, packaging, and logistics. At the same time, increased demand for agricultural production will create indirect employment opportunities throughout farming communities, transport services, equipment suppliers, and packaging manufacturers. Every successful shipment supports an entire network of businesses working together to strengthen our agricultural economy.

Looking back at our journey, it is difficult to believe that this business began in a small rented warehouse serving fewer than twenty farmers. Today, we proudly support hundreds of producers whose dedication inspires us every single day. Every challenge we have overcome has reinforced our belief that Zimbabwean agriculture has enormous untapped potential when farmers receive the right market access and logistical support.

Your contribution to this campaign is much more than financial assistance. It is an investment in hardworking farmers, stronger rural communities, sustainable agricultural development, food security, employment creation, and the future of Zimbabwean exports. Together, we can build an agricultural business that creates lasting opportunities for thousands of people while showcasing the incredible quality of produce grown by our nation's farmers.

On behalf of every farmer, employee, customer, logistics partner, and family connected to Ndlovu Fresh Harvest Exporters, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your encouragement, your trust, and your support. We would be honored to have you become part of this journey as we continue building a stronger future for Zimbabwean agriculture.
