Story

My name is Grace Mwangi, and I am the founder of Mwangi Natural Cosmetics Manufacturing, a Kenyan business dedicated to producing high-quality skincare and personal care products made from locally sourced natural ingredients. What started as a small home-based operation has grown into a respected manufacturing business supplying body lotions, body butters, soaps, facial oils, lip balms, shampoos, conditioners, and herbal skincare products to retailers, beauty stores, pharmacies, hotels, salons, and wellness businesses across Kenya. Every product we manufacture reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and supporting local farmers who grow the natural ingredients that make our formulations unique.

My passion for natural skincare began long before I ever imagined becoming an entrepreneur. As a teenager, I struggled with sensitive skin and found that many commercial products caused irritation instead of improving my condition. My grandmother introduced me to traditional skincare remedies prepared from shea butter, aloe vera, coconut oil, moringa, honey, and botanical extracts grown within our own community. Those simple remedies transformed my skin and sparked a lifelong fascination with natural cosmetic formulation.

After graduating with a degree in chemistry, I spent several years working for a multinational cosmetics company. During that time, I gained valuable experience in product formulation, quality assurance, manufacturing processes, regulatory compliance, and consumer product development. Although I appreciated the knowledge I gained, I became increasingly convinced that Kenya possessed an abundance of natural ingredients capable of supporting a thriving cosmetics manufacturing industry. Yet many local brands struggled to compete because they lacked modern production facilities and consistent manufacturing capacity.

Rather than continuing to wonder what might be possible, I decided to pursue my own vision. I left my secure job, invested nearly all of my personal savings, and transformed a small rented building into a modest production facility. My first production equipment consisted of a few stainless steel mixing tanks, manual filling machines, weighing scales, and basic laboratory equipment. During those early months, I personally developed every formulation, supervised production, designed product labels, managed inventory, responded to customers, and delivered orders throughout Nairobi.

The beginning was far from easy. Convincing retailers to stock products from an unknown local manufacturer required patience and persistence. Many stores were hesitant because imported brands dominated shelf space, and customers naturally recognized those familiar names. Instead of competing through aggressive pricing, I chose to compete through quality. We focused on using carefully selected ingredients, maintaining strict manufacturing standards, and ensuring every customer received products we were genuinely proud to put our name on.

Slowly, that strategy began to pay off. Customers who purchased one product often returned to try another, and many began recommending our brand to friends and family. Beauty therapists introduced our products to their clients, hotels requested custom amenities, and wellness stores appreciated having access to premium Kenyan-made skincare products. Those relationships became the foundation upon which our business continues to grow today.

Today, Mwangi Natural Cosmetics Manufacturing employs formulation specialists, production technicians, quality assurance officers, packaging staff, warehouse personnel, and sales representatives. We manufacture a growing range of skincare and personal care products using ingredients sourced from Kenyan farmers and cooperatives. Our shea butter, aloe vera, avocado oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and herbal extracts support dozens of agricultural suppliers whose livelihoods benefit directly from our continued growth. Every additional product we manufacture strengthens both local manufacturing and local agriculture.

One of the accomplishments that brings me the greatest pride is our commitment to women's economic empowerment. A significant number of our employees are women who have developed valuable technical skills in cosmetics manufacturing, laboratory testing, packaging, and quality management. We also collaborate with women's cooperatives that produce many of the natural raw materials used throughout our product range, creating sustainable income opportunities that extend well beyond our factory walls.

Over the last two years, demand for our products has increased dramatically. Existing retail customers continue expanding their orders, online sales have grown steadily, and several regional distributors have approached us about supplying neighboring markets. We have also received enquiries from hotel groups, pharmacies, supermarkets, and export buyers interested in stocking our products. While these opportunities are incredibly exciting, they have also highlighted the limitations of our current manufacturing capacity.

Much of our production process still relies on semi-manual equipment purchased when the business first started. Mixing larger batches takes considerably longer than it should, filling and sealing products requires significant manual labor, and production schedules are becoming increasingly difficult to manage during busy periods. Our employees work tirelessly to meet deadlines, yet we regularly find ourselves operating at maximum capacity while new orders continue arriving.

The greatest frustration is knowing that we have customers ready to buy our products but insufficient production capacity to serve them efficiently. Delayed deliveries create unnecessary pressure on our team and occasionally force customers to wait longer than we would like. We firmly believe that investing in modern manufacturing equipment is the next logical step toward serving our customers more effectively while maintaining the exceptional quality that built our reputation.

After carefully reviewing our operations, consulting equipment manufacturers, and preparing detailed financial projections, we developed an expansion plan focused on increasing efficiency rather than simply increasing volume. Modern automated equipment will improve production consistency, reduce waste, strengthen quality assurance, and enable us to manufacture significantly larger quantities without compromising the standards our customers expect.

We are seeking KSh 6,800,000 to purchase modern cosmetic manufacturing equipment, strengthen our production facility, and expand our capacity to manufacture premium Kenyan skincare products for customers throughout East Africa. Every shilling raised through this campaign will be invested directly into equipment and operational improvements that support sustainable long-term growth.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Purchase automated stainless-steel mixing vessels capable of producing larger cosmetic batches with greater consistency and improved quality control.

  • Install automatic bottle filling, capping, labeling, and sealing equipment that significantly increases production efficiency while reducing manual handling.

  • Expand our quality control laboratory with modern testing equipment to strengthen product safety, stability testing, and regulatory compliance.

  • Upgrade our manufacturing facility with improved ventilation, hygienic production areas, and energy-efficient electrical systems that support higher production volumes.

  • Recruit additional laboratory technicians, production operators, packaging specialists, warehouse personnel, and quality assurance professionals to support the expanded facility.

  • Increase inventory of packaging materials and locally sourced natural ingredients so production can continue without interruption during periods of high demand.

  • Strengthen employee training programmes covering advanced manufacturing practices, workplace safety, quality management, and equipment operation.

The impact of this project extends far beyond our own business. Increased production capacity will allow us to purchase larger quantities of natural ingredients from Kenyan farmers, creating additional income opportunities for agricultural communities. More manufacturing activity will create skilled employment within our factory while supporting packaging suppliers, logistics providers, retailers, and many other businesses connected to our supply chain. Consumers will benefit from greater access to premium skincare products proudly manufactured in Kenya using locally sourced ingredients.

We also hope our success inspires more young entrepreneurs, particularly women, to pursue careers in manufacturing. Kenya has tremendous talent, abundant natural resources, and enormous potential to build globally respected consumer brands. By investing in local manufacturing, we contribute not only to our own success but also to the continued development of Kenya's industrial economy.

When I reflect on how this journey began—with a few mixing tanks, borrowed equipment, and a dream of creating natural skincare products—I feel incredibly grateful for every customer, employee, supplier, and supporter who believed in our vision. Every challenge has strengthened our determination, and every milestone reminds us that local businesses can achieve extraordinary things with the right support.

Your contribution to this campaign is much more than an investment in machinery. You are supporting Kenyan manufacturing, empowering women, strengthening local agriculture, creating skilled employment, and helping build a cosmetics brand that proudly represents the quality and innovation our country has to offer. Together, we can continue proving that products made in Kenya can compete with the very best in the world.

On behalf of our employees, our partner farmers, our customers, and our families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your encouragement, your confidence, and your support. We would be honored to have you become part of the next chapter in the journey of Mwangi Natural Cosmetics Manufacturing.
