Story

My name is Nyasha Muchengeti, and I am the founder of Muchengeti Furniture Manufacturing, a Zimbabwean business specializing in the design and production of high-quality residential, office, hospitality, and educational furniture. Our company manufactures wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, office desks, conference tables, bookshelves, dining sets, school furniture, hotel furnishings, and custom-built interior solutions for businesses and homeowners. Every piece of furniture we produce reflects our belief that locally manufactured products can match international standards while creating employment opportunities and supporting Zimbabwe's growing manufacturing sector.

My passion for woodworking began in my father's small carpentry workshop. As a young boy, I spent countless afternoons watching him transform rough timber into beautiful pieces of furniture using little more than skill, patience, and determination. I learned that good furniture is not simply assembled—it is carefully crafted with precision, attention to detail, and respect for the materials being used. Those lessons shaped my work ethic long before I understood that they would eventually become the foundation of my own business.

After completing my vocational training in furniture design and joinery, I worked for several years at a commercial furniture manufacturer. There I gained valuable experience operating industrial woodworking machinery, interpreting technical drawings, selecting materials, managing production schedules, and maintaining strict quality standards. I also noticed a growing challenge within the market. Businesses, schools, hotels, and homeowners increasingly wanted locally manufactured furniture, yet many suppliers struggled with long delivery times because their production capacity was limited or outdated. Imported furniture often dominated the market despite being more expensive and sometimes lower in quality than products that could be manufactured locally.

These observations convinced me that there was an opportunity to establish a business focused on producing durable, attractive, and competitively priced furniture made in Zimbabwe. Eight years ago, I invested my savings, borrowed additional funds from relatives, and rented a modest workshop on the outskirts of Harare. My first production floor contained only a few woodworking machines, basic hand tools, and a small spray-finishing area. I hired three experienced craftsmen who shared my commitment to quality, and together we began accepting custom orders from local businesses and homeowners.

The early years demanded tremendous perseverance. Every contract mattered because every completed project helped build our reputation. We often worked late into the evening to meet customer deadlines while carefully managing cash flow to purchase timber, hardware, adhesives, and finishing materials. There were months when keeping the workshop operating required difficult sacrifices, but every satisfied customer gave us confidence that we were building something worthwhile.

Our commitment to craftsmanship gradually earned the trust of architects, interior designers, schools, hotels, and commercial property developers. Clients appreciated our willingness to customize designs according to their specific requirements instead of offering only standard products. Word-of-mouth referrals became our strongest source of new business, and over time our order book continued growing. We expanded our product range to include office workstations, classroom furniture, reception counters, hotel bedroom suites, retail display units, and large commercial furnishing projects.

Today, Muchengeti Furniture Manufacturing employs skilled carpenters, cabinet makers, machine operators, upholsterers, spray painters, designers, warehouse personnel, installers, and administrative staff. We source timber and raw materials from local suppliers wherever possible, strengthening domestic supply chains while supporting other Zimbabwean businesses. We are particularly proud that many of our employees joined us as apprentices and have since developed into highly skilled professionals capable of producing furniture that meets the expectations of demanding commercial clients.

One of the greatest privileges of operating this business has been contributing to projects that improve communities. Our furniture has been supplied to schools where children learn every day, clinics that care for patients, hotels welcoming visitors from around the world, and offices where entrepreneurs continue building new businesses. Knowing that our work becomes part of spaces where people live, learn, and work gives every project special meaning.

Despite our progress, our company has now reached an important turning point. Customer demand has grown considerably, particularly from schools, corporate organizations, hotels, and property developers undertaking large furnishing projects. Unfortunately, our existing production equipment limits the volume of work we can complete each month. Much of our machinery was purchased second-hand when the business first started and, although maintained carefully, it no longer provides the productivity required to compete for larger commercial contracts.

Many production processes still require significant manual labour because we lack modern CNC cutting equipment, automated edge banding machines, and advanced finishing systems. As a result, projects often take longer to complete than we would like, increasing labour costs while reducing the number of orders we can accept. There have been occasions when we declined valuable contracts simply because we knew our existing workshop could not guarantee delivery within the customer's required timeframe.

Storage has also become an increasing challenge. Limited warehouse space restricts our ability to purchase timber in larger quantities when prices are favourable, while cramped production areas reduce workflow efficiency and create unnecessary handling during manufacturing. Expanding both our workshop and equipment will allow us to streamline production while maintaining the craftsmanship that has become synonymous with our brand.

After months of planning with manufacturing consultants, equipment suppliers, architects, and financial advisers, we developed a carefully structured expansion strategy focused on improving productivity without compromising quality. Rather than replacing skilled craftsmanship, modern equipment will allow our team to work more efficiently, improve precision, reduce material waste, and increase production capacity for both custom and large-scale commercial projects.

We are seeking $1,950,000 to expand our manufacturing facility, purchase modern woodworking equipment, and strengthen our capacity to produce high-quality furniture for customers throughout Zimbabwe. Every dollar raised through this campaign will be invested directly into equipment, infrastructure, workforce development, and operational improvements that support long-term industrial growth.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Purchase CNC woodworking machinery, panel saws, edge banding equipment, sanding systems, and precision cutting technology that significantly improve manufacturing efficiency and product accuracy.

  • Expand our production workshop and warehouse facilities to improve workflow, increase storage capacity, and safely accommodate larger commercial projects.

  • Install modern spray-finishing booths and dust extraction systems that improve product quality while creating a safer working environment for employees.

  • Acquire forklifts, material handling equipment, and delivery vehicles that streamline logistics from production through customer installation.

  • Recruit additional carpenters, machine operators, furniture designers, upholsterers, installers, quality inspectors, warehouse personnel, and apprentices to support the expanded operation.

  • Strengthen apprenticeship and technical training programmes that develop the next generation of skilled furniture manufacturers in Zimbabwe.

  • Implement digital production planning and inventory management systems that improve scheduling, reduce waste, and enhance customer service.

The impact of this expansion extends well beyond our factory walls. Increasing our manufacturing capacity will create stable employment opportunities, strengthen local timber supply chains, reduce dependence on imported furniture, and support schools, businesses, hotels, and institutions seeking high-quality locally manufactured products. Every piece of furniture we produce contributes to Zimbabwe's manufacturing sector while demonstrating that locally crafted products can compete with the very best available anywhere.

We also hope this project inspires more young people to pursue careers in skilled manufacturing trades. Furniture production combines creativity, engineering, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship in ways that create lifelong careers while supporting economic development. By investing in modern manufacturing today, we are helping preserve valuable technical skills for future generations.

When I think back to the small workshop where this journey began, I remember working alongside three determined craftsmen with little more than a handful of machines and a dream of building something meaningful. Today, thanks to our employees, customers, suppliers, and supporters, that dream has become a respected manufacturing business. Yet we believe our greatest achievements are still ahead of us.

Your contribution to this campaign represents much more than purchasing machinery. You are investing in skilled employment, Zimbabwean manufacturing, vocational education, local craftsmanship, sustainable economic growth, and businesses that choose to buy products proudly made in our own country. Together, we can build a stronger manufacturing sector that creates opportunities for countless families while delivering exceptional furniture for generations to come.

On behalf of our employees, customers, suppliers, apprentices, and families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, encouragement, and support. We would be honoured to have you become part of the next chapter in the journey of Muchengeti Furniture Manufacturing.
