Mokoena Packaging Solutions
Story
My name is Thabo Mokoena, and I am the founder of Mokoena Packaging Solutions, a South African manufacturing business that designs and produces high-quality packaging products for food manufacturers, cosmetic companies, pharmaceutical businesses, agricultural producers, and retail brands. We manufacture paper packaging, corrugated cartons, printed product boxes, custom labels, and environmentally friendly packaging solutions that help businesses present their products professionally while protecting them throughout transportation and storage. Although packaging is often overlooked by consumers, it plays a critical role in every successful business. A well-designed package protects products, strengthens a brand, and creates the first impression customers have before making a purchase.
My journey into manufacturing began nearly fifteen years ago when I worked as a machine operator in a commercial printing company. Every day I watched thousands of packaging boxes roll off large production lines destined for supermarkets, exporters, pharmaceutical companies, and food manufacturers. I quickly realized that packaging was much more than cardboard and paper—it was an essential part of almost every industry. Whether someone purchased breakfast cereal, medicine, cosmetics, electronics, or fresh produce, every product depended on reliable packaging before reaching consumers.
Over the years I worked my way through different departments, learning pre-press operations, printing technology, finishing, die-cutting, quality control, and production planning. I became increasingly interested in how packaging manufacturing combined engineering, design, logistics, and customer service into one business. At the same time, I noticed that many small and medium-sized businesses struggled to find manufacturers willing to accept smaller production runs. Larger packaging companies understandably prioritized major contracts, leaving many growing businesses with limited options and long delivery times.
That gap in the market inspired me to start my own company. Seven years ago, I invested my savings, purchased a second-hand printing press, rented a small industrial workshop, and established Mokoena Packaging Solutions. In those early days, our production capacity was extremely limited. We focused primarily on producing simple printed cartons and packaging for local bakeries, cafés, clothing brands, and specialty food producers. I personally handled customer meetings, operated machinery, supervised production, loaded delivery vehicles, and often worked late into the night to complete urgent orders.
The beginning was challenging. Manufacturing equipment required frequent maintenance, raw material prices fluctuated regularly, and building customer confidence as a new business required patience. We competed against established manufacturers with far greater production capacity and stronger financial resources. Instead of trying to become the cheapest supplier, we built our reputation around flexibility, product quality, dependable delivery, and outstanding customer service. We listened carefully to our customers, responded quickly to design changes, and consistently delivered packaging that reflected the quality of the products it contained.
That commitment gradually earned the trust of businesses throughout our region. Customers who initially ordered small quantities returned with larger contracts as their own businesses expanded. Local food manufacturers recommended us to other entrepreneurs, cosmetic brands trusted us with premium packaging, and agricultural businesses approached us to develop export-ready cartons for fresh produce. Every satisfied customer became another long-term relationship that helped strengthen our business.
Today, Mokoena Packaging Solutions serves hundreds of businesses across South Africa. Our customers include bakeries, food processors, beverage manufacturers, cosmetic brands, pharmaceutical distributors, online retailers, clothing companies, agricultural exporters, and numerous small manufacturers that rely on dependable packaging to present their products professionally. We employ graphic designers, machine operators, warehouse personnel, production supervisors, quality assurance specialists, logistics staff, and administrative professionals who work together to ensure every order meets our customers' expectations.
One of the aspects of our business that makes me especially proud is supporting entrepreneurs who are launching their own brands. Many of our customers started with only a single product and a small production run. As their businesses grew, we expanded alongside them, developing improved packaging solutions that strengthened their brands and helped them compete in larger retail markets. Watching our customers succeed reminds us that our packaging protects much more than products—it supports dreams, livelihoods, and growing businesses.
However, our continued growth has exposed significant operational challenges. Demand for custom packaging has increased dramatically over the past three years, particularly as more businesses invest in professional branding and retail-ready presentation. Unfortunately, our existing machinery has become our greatest limitation. Much of our equipment was purchased when the business first started and was never intended to support the production volumes we now handle. Production schedules have become increasingly tight, machine downtime has become more frequent, and manual finishing processes slow our ability to complete larger orders efficiently.
Several customers have requested contracts that would more than double their current order volumes, but accepting those projects with our existing equipment would compromise delivery schedules for existing clients. Turning down opportunities is never easy, particularly when we know our customers genuinely want to continue growing with us. We have reached the stage where modern equipment is no longer a luxury—it has become essential for the future of our business.
Over the past year, we have worked closely with equipment suppliers, manufacturing consultants, and financial advisers to develop a comprehensive modernization plan. Rather than replacing individual machines one at a time, we intend to upgrade our production line with integrated automated equipment that improves printing quality, production speed, precision, and efficiency. This investment will enable us to manufacture larger production runs while maintaining the flexibility that has always distinguished our business.
We are seeking R4,850,000 to purchase modern packaging manufacturing equipment, expand our production capacity, and strengthen our ability to serve businesses throughout South Africa. Every rand raised through this campaign will be invested directly into equipment and operational improvements that support local manufacturing, employment, and long-term business growth.
The funds raised through this campaign will be invested in the following:
Purchase a modern multi-colour printing press capable of producing higher-quality packaging with greater production speed and improved colour consistency.
Install automated die-cutting, folding, gluing, and finishing equipment that significantly increases manufacturing efficiency while reducing production lead times.
Expand warehouse and raw material storage facilities to accommodate larger customer orders and improve inventory management.
Acquire forklifts, pallet handling equipment, and logistics infrastructure that improve internal material movement and dispatch operations.
Recruit additional machine operators, maintenance technicians, graphic designers, production planners, warehouse personnel, and quality assurance specialists to support the expanded facility.
Implement advanced digital production management software that improves scheduling, quality tracking, inventory control, and customer order management.
Invest in employee training programmes covering advanced manufacturing technologies, workplace safety, preventive maintenance, and sustainable production practices.
The impact of this project extends well beyond our own factory. Increasing our manufacturing capacity allows hundreds of South African businesses to access locally produced, high-quality packaging instead of relying on imported alternatives or suppliers with long delivery times. Stronger local packaging manufacturing supports food producers, agricultural exporters, cosmetic companies, pharmaceutical businesses, retailers, and countless entrepreneurs building brands throughout the country. Every package we manufacture becomes part of another company's success story.
This expansion will also create new employment opportunities across production, engineering, logistics, design, and administration while generating additional demand for paper suppliers, transport companies, maintenance contractors, and other local businesses. By investing in modern manufacturing technology today, we are laying the foundation for sustainable industrial growth that benefits many sectors of the South African economy.
When I think back to the small workshop where this business began, I remember operating a single machine with little more than determination and hope for the future. Every customer who trusted us, every employee who joined our team, and every challenge we overcame has contributed to the company we proudly operate today. While we are grateful for everything we have achieved, we believe our greatest opportunities still lie ahead.
Your contribution to this campaign represents much more than an investment in manufacturing equipment. You are supporting South African industry, local entrepreneurship, skilled employment, sustainable manufacturing, and businesses that depend on reliable packaging to compete successfully in today's marketplace. Together, we can strengthen local manufacturing while helping thousands of products proudly made in South Africa reach customers safely and professionally.
On behalf of our employees, customers, suppliers, and families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your encouragement, your confidence, and your support. We would be honoured to have you join us as we continue building the future of Mokoena Packaging Solutions.
