Story

My name is Lerato Maseko, and I am the founder of Maseko MedTech Supplies, a South African business that supplies essential medical equipment, consumables, and healthcare products to clinics, pharmacies, private medical practices, diagnostic laboratories, and community healthcare organizations. Our mission has always been simple: ensure that healthcare providers, regardless of their size, have reliable access to quality medical supplies so they can focus on caring for patients rather than worrying about inventory shortages.

My passion for healthcare did not begin in business. It began when I worked as an administrative assistant at a small community clinic shortly after graduating from university. Every day, I watched nurses and doctors perform extraordinary work despite limited resources. I also witnessed something that frustrated me deeply—procedures being delayed because essential medical supplies had not been delivered on time. Simple items such as examination gloves, syringes, wound dressings, diagnostic kits, and disinfectants were sometimes unavailable for days, affecting both healthcare workers and the patients who depended on them.

As I became more familiar with the healthcare industry, I realized these shortages were not always caused by manufacturers. More often, they resulted from weaknesses within the supply chain. Smaller clinics and independent medical practices frequently struggled to access dependable suppliers who could deliver quality products quickly and consistently. Larger distributors understandably focused on high-volume customers, leaving many smaller healthcare providers underserved.

Those experiences inspired me to establish a business focused specifically on serving small and medium-sized healthcare providers. I wanted to build a company known for reliability, transparency, competitive pricing, and exceptional customer service. Rather than becoming just another wholesaler, I wanted our customers to see us as a trusted logistics partner helping them deliver better healthcare to their communities.

Starting the business, however, proved far more difficult than I had imagined. Healthcare distribution is highly regulated, and earning the trust of medical professionals requires much more than simply opening a warehouse. I spent months obtaining the necessary registrations, building relationships with reputable manufacturers, learning inventory management systems, and understanding strict quality assurance requirements for medical products.

When we finally launched operations, our warehouse occupied less than two hundred square metres. Our inventory was modest, consisting primarily of basic consumables purchased using my savings and a small business loan. During the first year, I personally handled procurement, inventory management, customer service, invoicing, and deliveries. Every new customer represented another healthcare provider placing their trust in a business that was still proving itself.

Slowly, that trust began to grow. Doctors appreciated that we answered calls immediately, clinics valued our dependable delivery schedules, and pharmacies liked having a supplier willing to source products that larger distributors often overlooked. Instead of competing solely on price, we built our reputation on consistency, honesty, and responsiveness. Those values continue to define our business today.

Today, Maseko MedTech Supplies serves hundreds of customers throughout several provinces. Our clients include private clinics, general practitioners, dentists, physiotherapists, veterinary practices, pharmacies, occupational health providers, and nonprofit healthcare organizations. Every week we distribute thousands of essential medical products that help healthcare professionals deliver safe, effective care to patients of all ages.

One aspect of our business that makes me especially proud is our support for rural healthcare providers. Many clinics outside major cities struggle to receive regular deliveries because their order volumes are relatively small. We have intentionally developed logistics routes that ensure these facilities receive the same dependable service as larger urban customers. Every successful delivery means healthcare workers can continue treating patients without interruption.

The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced just how critical dependable medical supply chains are. Although those years brought extraordinary challenges, they also strengthened our relationships with customers who relied on us during uncertain times. We worked tirelessly to source products responsibly, communicate transparently about availability, and deliver supplies wherever possible. Those experiences transformed our business and demonstrated the importance of resilience, preparation, and strong supplier partnerships.

Since then, our customer base has continued expanding rapidly. Existing clients have increased their purchasing volumes, while new medical practices contact us almost every week seeking dependable supply partners. Unfortunately, our biggest challenge today is no longer attracting customers—it is maintaining enough working capital to purchase inventory in the quantities required to satisfy growing demand.

Medical supplies must often be purchased in large volumes to secure competitive pricing and guarantee availability. Unfortunately, our current financial resources limit how much stock we can hold at any given time. This creates situations where products sell out faster than expected, forcing customers to wait for replenishment or source supplies elsewhere. Every stock shortage represents lost sales for our business and unnecessary inconvenience for healthcare providers who depend on timely deliveries.

Our warehouse capacity is sufficient for continued growth, and our distribution network continues operating efficiently. What we need now is stronger working capital that allows us to purchase larger inventory volumes directly from trusted manufacturers and authorized distributors. Greater purchasing power will reduce procurement costs, improve product availability, and strengthen our ability to respond quickly during periods of increased demand.

We are seeking R3,200,000 in working capital to expand our medical inventory, strengthen supplier relationships, and improve our ability to provide uninterrupted service to healthcare providers throughout South Africa. This investment will directly improve inventory availability while ensuring our customers continue receiving the dependable service they have come to expect.

The funds raised through this campaign will be invested in the following:

  • Purchase larger quantities of essential medical consumables including gloves, syringes, wound care products, diagnostic supplies, and infection control materials.

  • Expand inventory of frequently requested medical devices and clinical equipment used by private practices and community healthcare facilities.

  • Strengthen purchasing agreements with accredited manufacturers and authorized distributors to secure improved pricing and more reliable supply.

  • Increase warehouse inventory levels to reduce stock shortages and improve order fulfillment times.

  • Recruit additional warehouse and customer support personnel to accommodate increased order volumes while maintaining excellent service standards.

  • Improve inventory forecasting and warehouse management systems that enhance operational efficiency and product traceability.

  • Maintain emergency reserve stock that allows rapid response during periods of unusually high healthcare demand.

The impact of this project reaches far beyond our own company. Better inventory availability means clinics can continue treating patients without unnecessary interruptions. Pharmacies will experience fewer delays in obtaining essential healthcare products. Medical professionals can spend more time caring for patients instead of searching for suppliers. Communities benefit when healthcare providers have dependable access to the equipment and consumables required to perform their work safely and effectively.

The expansion will also create new employment opportunities within our warehouse operations, customer service department, procurement team, and logistics network. As our business grows, we remain committed to investing in employee training, technology, and systems that improve service quality while supporting the long-term sustainability of our operations.

Looking back, it is remarkable to remember that this journey began with a small warehouse, limited inventory, and one simple goal: to become a supplier that healthcare professionals could genuinely rely on. Today, thanks to the trust of our customers and the dedication of our team, we have built a business that supports healthcare providers across multiple communities. Yet we believe this is only the beginning of what we can accomplish.

Your support represents much more than additional inventory on warehouse shelves. It represents improved healthcare delivery, stronger supply chains, better patient care, and greater confidence for the professionals who dedicate their lives to helping others. Every contribution strengthens our ability to support the healthcare system while ensuring essential medical products reach the people who need them most.

On behalf of our employees, our healthcare partners, and the many communities we proudly serve, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, your encouragement, and your support. Together, we can build a stronger healthcare supply network that benefits patients, medical professionals, and communities across South Africa for many years to come.
