Story

My name is Grace Wanjiku, and I am the founder of Wanjiku Furniture Works, a small furniture manufacturing business based in Nakuru, Kenya. My journey into woodworking began long before I officially registered my business. My father was a carpenter who spent decades building doors, tables, wardrobes, and school desks for families in our neighborhood. As a child, I spent countless weekends in his workshop handing him nails, sweeping sawdust, and watching rough timber slowly become something useful. Those experiences taught me that furniture is more than wood and screws. It becomes part of people's homes, schools, businesses, and everyday lives.

After completing college, I worked as a sales assistant in a furniture showroom for several years. That job helped me understand customer preferences, pricing, and the growing demand for quality furniture that is both durable and affordable. I noticed that many customers wanted locally made products instead of imported alternatives, but many small workshops lacked the machinery to produce furniture efficiently or maintain consistent quality. I believed there was room for a business that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing.

In 2019, I rented a modest workshop and started Wanjiku Furniture Works with a few second-hand tools, a small workbench, and two experienced carpenters who believed in my vision. During the early months, we accepted almost any woodworking project that came our way. We built dining tables, office desks, wardrobes, bookshelves, television stands, and custom kitchen cabinets. I handled customer consultations during the day and completed paperwork at night while also helping sand, paint, and package finished products whenever deadlines became tight.

Through consistent workmanship and honest communication, we gradually earned the trust of homeowners, schools, churches, offices, and small businesses throughout Nakuru County. Many of our customers return whenever they renovate their homes or expand their businesses, and referrals have become our largest source of new orders. We are especially proud that several local schools continue to trust us with classroom furniture because they know our products are built to last.

Although demand continues to grow, our production process remains heavily dependent on manual equipment. Some of our machines are more than fifteen years old and require frequent repairs that interrupt production schedules. Simple tasks such as cutting panels, edge finishing, and sanding often take much longer than they should. As a result, delivery times have increased, overtime costs have risen, and we occasionally lose contracts to larger manufacturers that can complete projects more quickly.

Despite these challenges, the business has remained financially responsible. We have expanded carefully by reinvesting profits into new tools, workshop improvements, and employee wages. We have avoided taking on loans that would place unnecessary pressure on the business during uncertain economic conditions. However, the size of investment now required to modernize our workshop is beyond what our retained earnings can realistically support.

The need for expansion has become increasingly urgent. We recently received opportunities to supply furniture to property developers, educational institutions, and corporate offices, but accepting these contracts requires greater production capacity and improved manufacturing efficiency. We already have the skilled team, loyal customer base, and supplier relationships necessary for growth. What we lack is the equipment needed to manufacture larger volumes while maintaining the quality our customers expect.

We are seeking KSh 3,950,000 to modernize our workshop, purchase advanced woodworking machinery, improve production efficiency, and expand employment opportunities within our community.

  • Purchase a CNC woodworking machine to improve precision, reduce waste, and increase production speed.

  • Acquire an industrial panel saw capable of handling larger furniture projects with greater accuracy.

  • Install a professional edge banding machine to improve product quality and finishing standards.

  • Purchase industrial sanding equipment to reduce production time and improve consistency.

  • Upgrade our dust extraction and workshop ventilation systems to provide a safer working environment.

  • Buy additional clamps, workbenches, compressors, and finishing equipment to support increased production.

  • Train our production team on operating and maintaining the new machinery safely and efficiently.

  • Maintain working capital for timber purchases, hardware supplies, paint, fittings, and transportation during the expansion period.

Our implementation plan has been designed to minimize disruption to existing customer orders. During the first month after funding, we will purchase the machinery, prepare the workshop, and complete electrical upgrades required for installation. The second month will focus on equipment commissioning and employee training. By the third month, we expect to operate at significantly higher production capacity while introducing improved quality control procedures. Within six months, we aim to supply larger institutional contracts while continuing to provide excellent service to our existing customers.

This expansion will benefit more than our own workshop. Increased production means purchasing more timber and hardware from local suppliers, supporting transport businesses, and contributing to the wider manufacturing economy. Faster production will also enable schools, businesses, and families to receive quality furniture more quickly while supporting local manufacturing instead of imported alternatives.

We expect this project to create at least fourteen new full-time jobs, including carpenters, machine operators, furniture finishers, installers, delivery personnel, and administrative staff. We also plan to introduce apprenticeship opportunities for young people interested in learning professional woodworking skills, giving them practical experience that can lead to long-term employment or entrepreneurship.

Looking ahead, my vision is for Wanjiku Furniture Works to become one of Kenya's most respected locally owned furniture manufacturers. I want our products to furnish homes, schools, offices, and hospitality businesses throughout East Africa while maintaining the craftsmanship, integrity, and customer service that have defined us from the beginning. Every piece of furniture we produce should reflect our commitment to quality and the pride we take in our work.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story and consider supporting our campaign. Your contribution is not simply helping us purchase machinery. It is helping skilled craftspeople build sustainable careers, supporting local manufacturing, and giving young apprentices the opportunity to learn valuable skills. On behalf of our entire team, our loyal customers, and our families, I sincerely appreciate your trust and support. We look forward to sharing every milestone with you as we build a stronger future together.
