Story

I started Ndlovu Poultry Farm with 250 chickens and a simple goal: to build a small business that could provide a reliable income for my family and eventually create opportunities for other people in my community.

Today, the farm has grown beyond what I initially imagined.

We now supply fresh chicken to households, food vendors and small businesses around Polokwane, Limpopo. We have developed regular customers and have learned a great deal about what it takes to run a poultry business.

But our growth has created a new challenge.

We are running out of production capacity.

That is why I am raising funds to expand Ndlovu Poultry Farm.

How It Started

My name is Lerato Ndlovu, and I am the founder of Ndlovu Poultry Farm.

I became interested in poultry farming after helping relatives who kept chickens on a small scale. I enjoyed the work and became interested in turning poultry farming into a business of my own.

In 2023, I decided to start.

I began with 250 broiler chickens. The operation was very basic. We had a small poultry house, basic feeders and drinkers, and a simple water system.

The first production cycle taught me a lot.

I learned that successful poultry farming requires much more than simply buying chickens and feeding them until they are ready for sale.

The birds need proper ventilation, clean water, appropriate feed, good hygiene and careful monitoring.

I made mistakes during those early cycles, but I learned from them.

After selling the first batch, I reinvested part of the income into the next cycle.

Gradually, the farm began to grow.

Customers Started Coming Back

One of the biggest signs that the business was working was that customers returned.

People who had purchased chickens from us started ordering again.

Some customers began buying several birds at a time for family gatherings and events.

We also started receiving orders from local food vendors.

These customers were particularly important because they could purchase regularly rather than only occasionally.

As our reputation grew, we began receiving more enquiries.

People would ask whether we could supply larger quantities or whether we could provide chickens on a regular schedule.

Unfortunately, we could not always say yes.

Our production capacity was too limited.

The Opportunity We Are Facing

There is demand for our product, but our current facilities prevent us from taking full advantage of it.

Our existing poultry house can only accommodate a limited number of birds.

Our current water system also requires too much manual work, and some of our equipment needs to be upgraded.

Increasing the number of birds without improving these facilities would not be responsible.

Instead, we want to expand the farm properly.

We want to construct an additional poultry house, improve our water system and purchase the equipment needed to manage a larger flock.

What We Plan to Do

The expansion will focus on increasing our production capacity while maintaining good standards of poultry care.

We plan to construct an additional poultry house with improved ventilation and easier cleaning.

We also want to purchase additional feeders and drinkers and improve the water supply system.

Part of the funding will be used to purchase chicks and feed for our larger production cycles.

We also need working capital for vaccinations, bedding, electricity, transportation and other operating expenses.

These costs are important because poultry farming requires money to be invested well before the chickens are ready for sale.

Having sufficient working capital will allow us to complete production cycles without constantly struggling to finance the next batch.

Why Expansion Matters

The purpose of this expansion is not simply to keep more chickens.

It is to make the business more reliable.

At our current size, there are times when we have to turn away customers because we do not have enough birds available.

That is frustrating when you know there is a market for your product.

With additional production capacity, we will be able to supply our existing customers more consistently and take on larger orders.

We also want to approach more restaurants, food vendors and small retailers around Polokwane.

Our aim is to become a dependable local supplier rather than a farm that only has products available occasionally.

Building a Stronger Business

As the farm grows, we also want to improve how we manage the business.

We are becoming more disciplined about keeping records for each production cycle.

We track the number of birds purchased, feed consumption, mortality, medication, operating costs and sales.

This information helps us understand what is working and where we need to improve.

A larger operation will require even better management.

We want to know exactly how much it costs to raise each batch and what our actual profit is after all expenses.

That will allow us to make better decisions as the business grows.

Creating Employment

Another reason I want to expand is the opportunity to create work.

At the moment, the farm is run by a small team, with additional help brought in when we have larger tasks such as cleaning, catching and transporting birds.

If production increases, we expect to need more regular help with feeding, cleaning, poultry care, harvesting and deliveries.

For me, that would be an important achievement.

I started this business because I wanted to create a sustainable source of income for myself.

I would like the business to eventually create that opportunity for other people as well.

Why We Are Asking for Support

Starting and expanding a poultry farm requires capital.

We have been able to grow gradually by reinvesting money from the business, but we have reached a point where doing everything from our existing revenue would make the expansion take much longer.

We are therefore asking people to support us as we take this next step.

The money raised through this campaign will be invested directly into the expansion of the farm and the working capital required to operate at a larger scale.

We want to build on what we have already created rather than start again from scratch.

Our Vision

Our long-term vision is to build Ndlovu Poultry Farm into a sustainable local poultry business serving households, restaurants, food vendors and retailers around Limpopo.

We want to increase production gradually, maintain good quality and build lasting relationships with our customers.

We also want to create a business that can provide employment and support other local businesses through the supplies and services we purchase.

We know there will be challenges.

Feed prices can change, disease remains a risk, and market conditions are not always predictable.

But we have already learned how to operate on a small scale.

Now we want to use that experience to build something bigger and more sustainable.

Help Us Take the Next Step

Ndlovu Poultry Farm started with 250 chickens.

Since then, we have built a customer base, completed multiple production cycles and developed a business that we believe has room to grow.

Our current challenge is capacity.

We have the experience and the demand.

What we need now is the capital to expand our facilities and increase production.

Your support can help us build the additional poultry house, improve our equipment and water system, finance new production cycles and create the foundation for future growth.

If you are unable to contribute, sharing this campaign with someone who may be interested would also help us tremendously.

We have started small.

Now we are asking for your support to help us take the next step.
