Story

Every morning before sunrise, our purchasing team visits local farmers to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy products, eggs, and other perishable goods before they reach larger wholesale markets. By the time most people begin their day, our shelves are already stocked with produce harvested only hours earlier. Customers often tell us they can immediately see and taste the difference. For us, freshness is not simply a selling point—it is the foundation of the trust we have built with thousands of families who depend on us for their daily groceries.

Harvest Fresh Retail Markets was established to make high-quality, locally sourced food affordable and easily accessible while creating dependable market opportunities for South African farmers and food producers. We operate neighbourhood grocery stores specialising in fresh produce, meat, dairy products, baked goods, pantry essentials, beverages, household items, and locally manufactured food products. By purchasing directly from farmers and producers whenever possible, we reduce unnecessary supply chain costs while ensuring our customers receive fresher products at competitive prices.

I am Lerato Mokoena, and before launching Harvest Fresh Retail Markets, I spent more than twelve years working in food distribution and supermarket operations. During that time, I gained firsthand experience of the challenges faced by both farmers and consumers. Farmers often struggled to secure reliable buyers offering fair prices, while families frequently paid more for products that had travelled long distances through multiple distribution channels. I became convinced that there was room for a retail business that could strengthen both ends of the supply chain while supporting local economic development.

We opened our first store inside a modest shopping centre with a small but carefully selected product range. Every purchasing decision mattered because working capital was limited, and every customer interaction helped shape our reputation. During those early months, I worked alongside employees unloading delivery trucks before dawn, arranging displays, assisting customers, processing payments, and managing supplier relationships. Although the workload was demanding, seeing customers return week after week confirmed that our commitment to quality and service was making a difference.

As our customer base expanded, so did our network of local suppliers. Today, Harvest Fresh Retail Markets purchases produce from independent farmers, bakeries, dairy producers, meat processors, beverage manufacturers, and small food businesses throughout South Africa. These partnerships allow us to offer fresher products while supporting local businesses that might otherwise struggle to compete with larger national suppliers. We believe strong communities are built when local businesses grow together rather than compete in isolation.

One initiative we are especially proud of is our support for emerging farmers. Many small-scale producers grow exceptional crops but face difficulties accessing reliable retail markets. By providing predictable purchasing agreements and fair payment terms, we help these farmers plan production more confidently while giving our customers access to fresh, locally grown food. Several suppliers who began with only seasonal deliveries now provide products to us throughout the year as their own businesses have expanded.

Despite our steady growth, the greatest challenge facing our business today is maintaining sufficient working capital. Retail operates on careful inventory planning, particularly when dealing with fresh food. Seasonal fluctuations, increasing supplier costs, and growing customer demand require larger inventory purchases well before products reach store shelves. Limited working capital restricts our ability to purchase larger quantities directly from producers, preventing us from securing better pricing and limiting stock availability during peak demand periods.

We have also identified opportunities to introduce additional locally produced food brands, expand fresh bakery selections, improve refrigerated displays, and increase inventory across fast-moving product categories. However, these opportunities require stronger cash flow to finance inventory purchases while maintaining healthy operating reserves. Strengthening our working capital will allow us to grow sustainably without compromising the service standards our customers expect.

After working closely with financial advisers, retail consultants, inventory specialists, and supplier partners, we developed a practical growth strategy focused on strengthening our inventory purchasing power rather than expanding into additional locations immediately. By improving cash flow, we can increase stock availability, negotiate better supplier pricing, reduce stock shortages, and deliver even greater value to our customers.

We are seeking R4,200,000 in working capital to strengthen inventory purchasing, improve cash flow, and support the continued growth of Harvest Fresh Retail Markets. Every rand raised through this campaign will be invested directly into purchasing additional stock, supporting local suppliers, and ensuring our stores continue delivering fresh, affordable products to the communities we serve.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Increase purchases of fresh produce, dairy products, meat, bakery goods, beverages, and essential grocery items directly from trusted local suppliers to improve product availability.

  • Strengthen working capital reserves that allow us to maintain consistent inventory levels during seasonal demand fluctuations and supplier price increases.

  • Expand partnerships with emerging farmers and local food manufacturers by increasing purchasing volumes and offering more predictable ordering schedules.

  • Improve refrigerated inventory management to reduce waste while maintaining excellent product freshness and food safety standards.

  • Recruit additional inventory controllers, warehouse assistants, merchandising staff, and customer service personnel to support increasing sales volumes.

  • Upgrade inventory forecasting systems that improve purchasing accuracy, reduce stock shortages, and optimise product rotation across our stores.

  • Introduce additional locally manufactured food products that provide customers with greater choice while supporting South African producers.

The impact of this campaign extends far beyond our retail stores. Every additional purchase we make supports farmers, food manufacturers, transport companies, packaging suppliers, warehouse workers, and countless other businesses that contribute to South Africa's food supply chain. Stronger local retail also helps communities access fresher food while keeping more economic value within the local economy.

Our long-term vision is to establish Harvest Fresh Retail Markets as one of South Africa's most trusted neighbourhood grocery brands, recognised for exceptional service, quality products, strong supplier relationships, and meaningful support for local agriculture and food production. We believe successful retail is built on trust, consistency, and genuine partnerships with both customers and suppliers.

Looking back, it is incredible to remember that our journey began with one small neighbourhood store and a determination to create a better shopping experience. Every customer who chose to shop with us, every farmer who trusted us with their harvest, and every employee who believed in our mission has helped shape the business we are today. Their support continues inspiring us to grow responsibly while remaining committed to the communities we proudly serve.

Your contribution to this campaign represents much more than additional working capital. You are supporting local farmers, South African food producers, employment opportunities, stronger community businesses, and a retail company dedicated to making fresh, high-quality food more accessible for families every day. Together, we can continue strengthening local food systems while creating lasting value for everyone involved.

On behalf of our employees, farmers, suppliers, customers, logistics partners, and families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, encouragement, and support. We would be honoured to have you become part of the next chapter of Harvest Fresh Retail Markets.
