Growing Njeri Home Essentials Into a Reliable Household Goods Supplier
Story
My name is Miriam Njeri, and I am the founder of Njeri Home Essentials, a small retail business serving households and small hospitality businesses in Nakuru, Kenya. I started the business after noticing how difficult it was for people in my neighborhood to find everyday household products in one convenient place without travelling into the town centre. What began as a small shelf of cleaning products and basic kitchen items in a rented shop has gradually become a dependable local store with customers who return every week.
Before starting the business, I worked as an assistant in a wholesale shop where I learned how stock purchasing, pricing, supplier relationships, and customer service work in practice. I enjoyed speaking with customers and quickly noticed that certain products sold consistently while others remained on shelves for months. That experience became useful when I eventually decided to open my own shop. I started with a limited amount of savings and purchased only products that I believed local families would need regularly.
The first months were difficult because I had to compete with larger stores that could purchase stock in much greater quantities. I could not always match their prices, so I focused on something I could control: availability and personal service. Customers could ask me to source products they could not find, place small orders by phone, and collect purchases without spending hours in a large supermarket. I also began keeping careful records of what customers requested most frequently, which helped me make better purchasing decisions.
Today, Njeri Home Essentials stocks laundry detergents, dishwashing products, cleaning supplies, toiletries, kitchen accessories, plastic household items, storage containers, and selected hospitality supplies. Our customers include families, small restaurants, guesthouses, salons, schools, and office managers who need regular quantities of everyday products. We also receive orders through WhatsApp from customers who prefer to confirm availability before visiting the shop. This has helped us build a loyal customer base and has gradually increased our average order size.
One of our biggest challenges is stock availability. Because our working capital is limited, we often have to purchase smaller quantities from wholesalers. This means we pay higher unit prices and sometimes run out of popular products before the next restocking trip. When customers cannot find what they need, they naturally go elsewhere. We have lost repeat sales because products that should have been available were temporarily out of stock. The problem becomes especially noticeable around school opening periods, holidays, and the end of the month when household spending increases.
Our financial history has been based on steady reinvestment rather than large outside financing. I have used profits to pay rent, utilities, transport costs, staff wages, and gradually increase inventory. The business is generating regular sales, but the amount of capital tied up in daily operations limits how much stock I can purchase at one time. Rising wholesale prices and transportation costs have also made small purchasing trips increasingly expensive. Buying in larger quantities would improve our margins, but our current cash position prevents us from taking advantage of those savings.
We now have a clear opportunity to improve the business. Several nearby guesthouses and small restaurants have asked whether we can supply their recurring household and cleaning requirements. We have also identified a group of fast-moving products that customers regularly request but that we cannot keep consistently in stock. With additional inventory capital, we can purchase these products in larger quantities, negotiate better wholesale prices, and maintain enough stock to serve customers throughout the month.
We are seeking KSh 1,450,000 to purchase high-demand inventory, strengthen our stock levels, improve our wholesale purchasing power, and expand the range of household products available to customers.
Purchase bulk quantities of fast-moving laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, disinfectants, and household cleaning products.
Increase stock of toiletries and personal care items that customers purchase regularly.
Purchase additional kitchenware, storage containers, plastic household products, and other frequently requested items.
Build a dedicated inventory allocation for small restaurants, guesthouses, salons, and offices requiring recurring supplies.
Purchase selected products directly from larger distributors to reduce the cost of repeated small wholesale trips.
Improve shelves and storage organization so larger inventory volumes can be safely managed and tracked.
Introduce simple stock management tools to monitor fast-moving products, reorder levels, and supplier prices.
Reserve a portion of the funding as working capital for restocking products that sell faster than expected.
During the first month after funding, we will finalize supplier orders based on our existing sales records and customer requests. We will prioritize products with proven demand rather than using the funds to fill the shop with slow-moving items. In the second month, the larger inventory will arrive and the store layout will be reorganized to improve customer access. By the third month, we expect to begin servicing recurring supply orders from hospitality and small business customers while maintaining stronger household stock levels.
The additional inventory will allow us to improve both customer service and profitability. Purchasing larger quantities should reduce the average cost of many products, while better stock availability should increase the number of customers who complete their purchases with us instead of visiting another store. We will continue tracking sales closely so that expansion does not result in excessive money being tied up in products that move slowly.
The project will create at least four new jobs as sales volume increases. These positions will include a shop assistant, inventory and stock control support, a delivery assistant, and additional part-time help during busy periods. We will also increase our purchases from local transport providers and distributors, creating additional business activity beyond the shop itself.
My long-term vision is to turn Njeri Home Essentials into a trusted household supply business with several outlets across Nakuru County. I eventually want to offer a simple ordering and delivery service for households and small businesses, allowing customers to replenish common household products without travelling to the shop. For our business customers, I hope to develop scheduled monthly supply arrangements that give them predictable prices and reliable access to essential products.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our business and consider supporting this campaign. This funding would help us solve a very practical problem: having enough of the products our customers already want to buy. Your contribution would allow us to purchase more efficiently, serve more people, create employment, and build a stronger local retail business. I am grateful to every customer who has supported us since our first small shop and to every person willing to help us take the next step. We will use the funds carefully and measure our progress through stronger stock availability, improved sales, and better service to our community.
