Story

Every Monday before sunrise, our team begins harvesting vegetables that will be delivered to supermarkets, restaurants, schools, hotels, and families across Nairobi and neighbouring counties. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from seeing fresh produce harvested only hours before reaching customers. Yet behind every successful harvest lies months of planning, irrigation, soil preparation, crop management, and careful coordination. Farming has taught us patience, resilience, and humility because every season presents new opportunities as well as new challenges.

GreenLeaf Organics was established to produce premium organic vegetables, herbs, and specialty crops using environmentally responsible farming methods that promote soil health, conserve water, and deliver nutritious food to consumers. Our farm cultivates lettuce, spinach, kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, herbs, strawberries, and other high-value crops supplied to supermarkets, restaurants, food processors, hotels, schools, and retail distributors. Every harvest reflects our commitment to sustainable agriculture, food safety, and consistent product quality.

My name is Mercy Wanjiku, and I grew up in a farming family where agriculture was more than a source of income—it was a way of life. Although I later studied agribusiness at university, I always intended to return to farming with new ideas and modern production methods. During my studies, I became increasingly interested in organic agriculture after learning how consumer preferences were shifting toward healthier foods produced with environmentally sustainable practices. At the same time, I recognised that many Kenyan farmers wanted to adopt improved farming techniques but lacked access to reliable markets and sufficient working capital to support continuous production throughout the year.

GreenLeaf Organics began with only a few acres of leased farmland, basic irrigation equipment, and a small but determined team. During those early seasons, every harvest required careful planning because even minor production mistakes could affect our ability to fulfil customer orders. We personally sorted vegetables, loaded delivery vehicles before dawn, visited customers after deliveries, and constantly sought feedback regarding product freshness, packaging quality, and consistency. Those conversations helped us build lasting relationships based on trust rather than simply competitive pricing.

Today, GreenLeaf Organics supplies fresh produce to supermarkets, independent retailers, restaurants, catering businesses, hospitality groups, and institutional buyers throughout Kenya. We have invested significantly in drip irrigation, integrated pest management, crop rotation, and post-harvest handling practices that reduce waste while maintaining exceptional quality. Our customers know that when they place an order with GreenLeaf, they receive produce harvested with care, packed professionally, and delivered reliably.

One initiative that brings us particular pride is our collaboration with neighbouring smallholder farmers. During peak production periods, we purchase additional crops from carefully selected local growers who follow the same quality standards we maintain on our own farm. This partnership provides nearby farming families with dependable markets while allowing us to satisfy larger customer orders without compromising freshness or quality. We believe agriculture becomes stronger when farmers grow together instead of competing against one another.

Demand for fresh organic produce has continued increasing as consumers become more health-conscious and businesses seek dependable local suppliers. However, agriculture requires substantial working capital before revenue is generated. Seeds, seedlings, fertilisers approved for organic farming, irrigation supplies, labour costs, packaging materials, transport, and routine farm maintenance must all be financed months before crops are harvested and sold. Our current working capital limits the number of hectares we can cultivate each season, preventing us from fully meeting customer demand despite having available farmland and experienced staff.

Increasing our working capital will allow us to plant larger areas, improve crop scheduling throughout the year, maintain stronger inventory of agricultural inputs, and expand production into additional high-demand crops requested by our commercial customers. These investments will strengthen production reliability while supporting more employment opportunities within our farming operations.

Following consultations with agronomists, agricultural economists, irrigation specialists, supermarket buyers, restaurant partners, and experienced commercial farmers, we developed a carefully planned production strategy focused on expanding cultivation responsibly while preserving the environmental principles that define GreenLeaf Organics. Sustainable growth in agriculture requires balancing productivity with responsible stewardship of natural resources.

We are seeking KSh 9,420,000 in working capital to strengthen GreenLeaf Organics' production capacity and ensure uninterrupted farming operations throughout multiple growing seasons. Every shilling raised through this campaign will be invested directly into crop production, agricultural inputs, farm operations, and supply chain improvements that deliver fresh, nutritious food to Kenyan consumers.

The funds raised through this campaign will be used for the following:

  • Purchase high-quality seeds, certified seedlings, organic fertilisers, soil improvement materials, irrigation supplies, and approved crop protection products required for year-round production.

  • Increase cultivation across additional farmland while strengthening irrigation systems, crop scheduling, and field management practices that improve harvest consistency and overall productivity.

  • Recruit additional farm workers, irrigation technicians, harvest supervisors, packaging personnel, and logistics staff to support expanded agricultural operations during peak production periods.

  • Purchase environmentally friendly packaging materials, harvest containers, cold-chain supplies, and transport resources that preserve product freshness from farm to customer.

  • Expand partnerships with neighbouring smallholder farmers through contract farming arrangements that increase supply capacity while supporting rural livelihoods.

  • Improve post-harvest handling, cold storage, quality inspection, and inventory management systems that reduce food waste and maintain premium product quality.

  • Maintain sufficient working capital reserves to support continuous planting cycles, ensuring customers receive dependable supply throughout every season regardless of temporary market fluctuations.

The impact of this campaign extends well beyond our own farm. Every successful harvest supports agricultural workers, transport providers, packaging suppliers, retailers, restaurants, schools, hospitality businesses, and farming families throughout our region. Stronger local agriculture also contributes to food security, healthier communities, environmental sustainability, and greater economic resilience across Kenya.

Our long-term vision is to establish GreenLeaf Organics as one of East Africa's leading producers of premium organic vegetables, recognised for sustainable farming, exceptional quality, responsible environmental stewardship, and meaningful partnerships with farming communities. We believe agriculture has the power not only to feed people but also to create lasting economic opportunities while protecting the natural resources future generations will depend upon.

Looking back, it is inspiring to remember that GreenLeaf Organics began with a few cultivated fields, a passionate farming team, and a belief that responsible agriculture could build a stronger future. Every customer who trusted our produce, every employee who worked tirelessly through changing seasons, every farming partner who shared our commitment to quality, and every supporter who believed in our vision has helped shape the business we proudly continue growing today.

Your support for this campaign represents much more than providing working capital for a farm. You are investing in sustainable agriculture, healthier food systems, rural employment, environmental responsibility, local food production, and a Kenyan farming business committed to nourishing communities through responsible agricultural practices. Together, we can continue growing fresh produce that benefits families, businesses, and future generations alike.

On behalf of our farm workers, agronomists, harvesting teams, customers, farming partners, employees, and families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We sincerely appreciate your confidence, encouragement, and support. We would be honoured to have you become part of the next chapter of GreenLeaf Organics.
