Story

My name is Precious Nwankwo, and I own GreenBasket Provisions, a small food and household retail business in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. I started GreenBasket because I noticed that families in my area were often forced to travel farther than necessary to buy basic food and household supplies at reasonable prices. Some nearby shops carried only a limited selection, while larger supermarkets were not always convenient for customers who simply needed a few everyday items. I wanted to create a dependable neighbourhood store where people could find the products they already use without spending extra money on transportation.

GreenBasket Provisions started in 2022 from a small rented shop. Before opening the business, I had worked in retail and spent time helping with a family trading business. Those experiences taught me that successful retail is not only about having products on shelves. It is about understanding customers, managing stock carefully, controlling expenses and making sure that essential products are available when people need them.

I started with my personal savings and a very modest inventory. The first products I purchased included rice, beans, garri, noodles, spaghetti, cooking oil, seasoning, beverages, detergents, bathing soap, tissue paper and other household essentials. I could not afford to stock many brands or large quantities, so I concentrated on products that I believed would sell quickly.

The first few months were challenging. Customers would enter the shop asking for products I did not have, while some items I expected to sell quickly remained on the shelves. Instead of continuing to guess what people wanted, I began writing down customer requests and paying close attention to what sold every day. That simple habit changed the business.

I discovered that customers had very different needs. Families wanted affordable smaller package sizes that could fit into their daily or weekly budgets. Restaurants and food vendors needed larger quantities of rice, cooking oil, seasoning and cleaning products. Students and young workers often purchased noodles, beverages, cereals, toiletries and other inexpensive essentials. I gradually changed my purchasing decisions around these patterns.

Over time, GreenBasket developed a group of regular customers. Some families have been shopping with us since our first year. Small food vendors also began buying their supplies from us because they could purchase enough stock for their operations without having to visit a wholesale market every time they needed to restock.

Today, our customers include households, food vendors, small restaurants, salons, offices and students living around our area of Port Harcourt. We sell everyday food products such as rice, beans, garri, semovita, noodles, spaghetti, cereals, beverages, canned foods, cooking oil and seasonings. Our household section includes detergents, bleach, disinfectants, tissue, bathing products, dishwashing liquid, sponges and other cleaning supplies.

I run the business with one assistant who helps with customers, shelf arrangement, stock counting and receiving deliveries. I handle purchasing, supplier relationships, bookkeeping and most business decisions. We purchase mainly from wholesalers and distributors in Port Harcourt, comparing prices before making larger purchases. For some products, buying directly from a distributor is significantly cheaper than buying small quantities from a nearby wholesaler, but our current cash position does not always allow us to take advantage of those better prices.

That is one of the biggest challenges facing GreenBasket today.

Our customer base has grown faster than our inventory. There are days when customers come looking for products we normally sell, only to find that we have run out. When a customer needs cooking oil, rice, detergent or another essential item and we do not have it, they simply walk to another shop. I understand this because customers cannot wait for a small retailer to restock when they need something immediately.

Stock shortages also affect our relationship with business customers. A food vendor who depends on a particular quantity of rice or cooking oil needs to know that the supplier will have it available. We have already had customers ask whether they can place regular weekly orders with us, but I have been cautious about accepting commitments that our current inventory cannot reliably support.

The cost of goods has also become more difficult to manage. Prices from suppliers change frequently, and the amount of money required to replenish the same stock is often higher than it was a few months earlier. When our capital is limited, we sometimes have to choose which products to restock first. Essential fast-moving items receive priority, while slower-moving products may have to wait.

Despite these challenges, GreenBasket has remained operational because I have been disciplined about reinvesting money into the business. I have not treated the store as a source of personal income first. Most of what the business earns goes back into stock, rent, transportation, wages and other operating expenses. I have also avoided relying heavily on short-term borrowing because high repayment pressure could put the business in a difficult position during slower sales periods.

I believe the business has reached a point where additional capital can make a meaningful difference. We are not trying to build demand from nothing. Customers are already coming into the store. The problem is that we need enough inventory and working capital to serve them better.

We are seeking ₦1,560,000 to expand GreenBasket Provisions, increase our inventory, improve the shop and strengthen our ability to serve both household and business customers.

The funding will be used carefully. Approximately ₦620,000 will go toward increasing our stock of fast-moving food products such as rice, beans, garri, noodles, spaghetti, cooking oil, cereals, beverages and seasonings. These are products that customers already purchase regularly, so the additional inventory will directly support sales.

Another ₦300,000 will be used for household and cleaning supplies, including detergents, tissue, disinfectants, bathing products, dishwashing products, sponges and other everyday essentials. Increasing this section of the shop will allow us to offer customers a more complete range of products instead of sending them elsewhere for basic household needs.

About ₦220,000 will be used to increase stock of larger package sizes for restaurants, food vendors, salons and small offices. These customers often purchase more than individual households, and serving them consistently could provide GreenBasket with a valuable source of recurring revenue.

We plan to use ₦170,000 to improve shelving and storage inside the shop. Some of our current stock is difficult to organize because the available shelving is limited. Better storage will allow us to display more products properly, make stock counting easier and use the available shop space more efficiently.

Approximately ₦150,000 will be reserved for transportation, supplier deliveries and working capital. This reserve will help us respond to changes in supplier prices and cover short-term operating expenses without immediately taking money away from inventory purchases.

The remaining ₦100,000 will support the introduction of a simple local delivery service for regular customers. We already receive requests from nearby households and small businesses that would rather place an order by phone or WhatsApp than leave their businesses or homes to shop. We will initially use local dispatch riders rather than purchase a vehicle, allowing us to test the service without taking on unnecessary costs.

The expansion will begin immediately after the funds are received. During the first two weeks, I will review our sales records and identify the products with the highest turnover. I will then compare prices from our existing suppliers and negotiate better rates by purchasing larger quantities. The first priority will be products that frequently sell out.

During the first month, we will reorganize the shop and install additional shelving. Inventory will be grouped more clearly so customers can find products easily and staff can monitor stock levels. I will also introduce minimum stock levels for our most important products so that we can reorder before they completely run out.

In the second month, I plan to approach nearby restaurants, food vendors, salons and small offices with a simple list of the products we can supply. Rather than waiting for these businesses to visit the shop, we will offer scheduled deliveries for customers who place recurring orders.

By the third month, the goal is to have a more predictable purchasing and sales cycle. We expect to reduce the number of stock-outs, increase our average monthly sales and build stronger relationships with recurring business customers.

The expansion should also create employment. GreenBasket currently depends heavily on me and one assistant. If sales increase as expected, I plan to employ two additional people within the first year. One person will help with stock management and shop operations, while another will assist with deliveries and customer orders. As the business grows, I would like to create more stable employment opportunities for young people in the community.

My long-term vision is to build GreenBasket Provisions into a trusted neighbourhood retail brand in Port Harcourt. I do not want it to remain a single small shop forever. I would like to eventually operate additional outlets in other residential areas, develop a reliable wholesale purchasing network and offer convenient ordering and delivery for households and small businesses.

I also want GreenBasket to remain affordable. Growth should not mean becoming disconnected from the customers who helped us survive the early years. Many of our customers are families who carefully plan their spending, and I understand how important it is for them to find reasonable prices on products they cannot avoid buying.

This business has taught me patience. There have been days when sales were disappointing, suppliers changed their prices without warning and customers asked for products we could not afford to stock. There have also been encouraging moments, such as seeing a customer who first bought one small item return months later with a larger order. Those moments remind me that a small retail business can become valuable when it consistently solves everyday problems.

GreenBasket Provisions has already survived the difficult beginning. We have customers, supplier relationships, operating experience and a clear understanding of what people in our community need. What we lack is enough working capital to take advantage of the demand that already exists.

With the right support, I believe GreenBasket can become a stronger and more dependable business. We can keep more essential food and household products available, serve more customers, support local suppliers and create new jobs.

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read our story and consider supporting GreenBasket Provisions. Whether you contribute to the campaign or share it with someone who may be interested, your support can help us move from simply maintaining a small shop to building a sustainable local retail business. I am grateful for every person who believes that small businesses can grow when given the opportunity, and I look forward to building the next chapter of GreenBasket with the support of our customers and community.
