Expand Arewa Fresh Foods Into a Modern Food Processing Facility
Story
My name is Amina Abubakar, and I am the founder of Arewa Fresh Foods, a growing food processing business based in Kaduna, Nigeria. I started this business with one simple goal: to reduce the amount of fresh produce that goes to waste after harvest while making healthy, locally processed food more accessible to Nigerian families. Growing up in a farming community, I watched hardworking farmers lose a large portion of their harvest because there were not enough buyers or processing facilities. Every harvest season, baskets of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and vegetables spoiled before reaching consumers. I always believed there had to be a better way.
After graduating from university, I worked for several years in the food distribution sector, where I gained firsthand experience with supply chains, food preservation, and retail demand. During that time, I realized that many supermarkets wanted locally processed products, but small processors lacked the equipment and production capacity to meet quality standards. Rather than continue complaining about the problem, I decided to become part of the solution.
I invested my personal savings into purchasing basic processing equipment and rented a small workspace on the outskirts of Kaduna. In the beginning, I prepared dried pepper, tomato powder, ginger powder, garlic powder, and packaged spices by hand with the help of my younger sister and two neighbours. We cleaned, sliced, dried, ground, weighed, and sealed every product ourselves. Our production days often started before sunrise and ended late at night, but seeing customers return to buy again convinced us that quality always speaks for itself.
Today, Arewa Fresh Foods supplies packaged spices and dried food ingredients to neighborhood supermarkets, grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, and market traders. We have also built relationships with dozens of smallholder farmers who now sell their produce directly to us during harvest seasons instead of watching it spoil in their fields. Our customers appreciate that our products contain no unnecessary fillers and are processed under clean conditions using carefully selected ingredients.
Despite the encouraging growth, the business has reached a stage where our current equipment can no longer keep up with demand. Our drying capacity is limited, our grinders frequently require repairs, and our manual packaging process slows production considerably. During peak seasons, we receive orders that we simply cannot fulfill on time. Turning away customers is frustrating because we know those sales could help us employ more people and purchase even more produce from local farmers.
Like many small businesses, we have grown through careful financial discipline. Every major purchase has been funded from business profits. We have never received grants or external investment. While this conservative approach has helped us remain financially responsible, it also means expansion has happened much more slowly than market demand. Inflation, rising energy costs, transportation expenses, and equipment maintenance have further reduced the amount we can save for major investments.
The timing for expansion has never been better. Several retail chains have expressed interest in stocking our products if we can guarantee larger production volumes and consistent packaging standards. We have also been approached by distributors serving neighboring states. These opportunities could completely transform our business, but they require modern processing equipment that is currently beyond our financial reach.
We are seeking ₦6,800,000 to purchase modern food processing equipment, improve production efficiency, increase capacity, and create more opportunities for farmers and workers across our community.
Purchase industrial food dehydrators to increase drying capacity while maintaining consistent product quality.
Acquire high-capacity stainless steel grinding machines for spices and dried vegetables.
Buy an automatic weighing and sealing machine to improve packaging speed and consistency.
Install food-grade stainless steel preparation tables and storage systems.
Purchase a standby generator and voltage protection equipment to minimize production interruptions.
Upgrade quality control tools, including moisture testing and food safety equipment.
Train production staff on food safety, equipment operation, and preventive maintenance.
Provide working capital for additional raw material purchases during the first expansion cycle.
Our implementation plan is realistic and carefully scheduled. During the first month after funding, we will order and install the new equipment while preparing the production floor for improved workflow. The second month will focus on staff training, equipment testing, and introducing updated quality control procedures. By the third month, we expect production capacity to more than double, allowing us to fulfill existing customer orders while expanding into new retail outlets. Within six months, we aim to establish distribution partnerships across multiple states in northern Nigeria.
The impact of this expansion extends beyond our own company. Increased production means purchasing larger quantities of vegetables and spices from local farmers, reducing post-harvest losses and improving rural incomes. More efficient processing will also make our products more affordable for consumers while strengthening local manufacturing. We believe that supporting Nigerian agriculture begins by creating dependable markets for locally grown produce.
As production grows, we expect to create at least twelve new full-time jobs across production, packaging, logistics, quality assurance, sales, and administration. In addition, seasonal workers will be hired during harvest periods when processing volumes increase significantly. These employment opportunities will provide stable incomes for families while helping young people develop valuable technical skills within the food manufacturing sector.
Looking ahead, my vision is for Arewa Fresh Foods to become one of Nigeria's leading producers of high-quality processed food ingredients while remaining committed to ethical sourcing and community development. I want our products to be found in supermarkets throughout West Africa, all while continuing to purchase directly from local farmers and maintaining the high standards that built our reputation.
Every contribution to this campaign represents more than financial support. It represents confidence in local manufacturing, Nigerian farmers, and small businesses determined to create lasting impact. On behalf of my family, our employees, our partner farmers, and every customer who believes in our products, I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read our story. Your support will help us build a stronger business that benefits many more people for years to come.
