Story

My name is Tendai Chikore, and I am the founder of Chikore Poultry Farm, a family-owned poultry business located just outside Gweru, Zimbabwe. I never imagined that keeping a few chickens behind my house would one day grow into a business that supplies hundreds of families, restaurants, butcheries, and market vendors every month. My journey started during one of the most difficult financial periods my family had ever experienced. I had recently lost my job in the transport industry, and with school fees, household expenses, and elderly parents depending on me, I knew I had to find another source of income.

I used my small savings to purchase one hundred day-old chicks and converted an unused storage building into a simple poultry house. I had very little experience beyond what I had learned from local farmers and agricultural extension officers. Every mistake became a lesson. I learned how important temperature control was during the first few weeks, how feed quality affected growth rates, and how proper sanitation could prevent diseases that might otherwise wipe out an entire flock. Those first months were stressful, but each successful production cycle gave me more confidence to continue.

As production improved, people in nearby communities began recommending our farm because they appreciated the healthy birds we consistently supplied. Local butcheries started placing regular orders, followed by restaurants and food vendors who valued dependable deliveries. We later introduced dressed chickens after investing in basic processing equipment, making it easier for busy families and businesses to buy ready-to-cook products. Today, many of our customers have supported us for years, and they continue to recommend us because they know they will receive quality products every time.

The business has grown steadily through persistence and responsible financial management. Instead of withdrawing profits for personal spending, my family and I reinvested as much as possible into improving the poultry houses, purchasing better feeders and drinkers, and strengthening our biosecurity practices. We also established relationships with trusted feed suppliers and veterinary professionals who help us maintain healthy flocks. These improvements have allowed us to build a business that customers trust.

However, the demand we experience today is far greater than our current production capacity. Many customers request larger weekly deliveries than we can provide, particularly during holiday seasons when poultry consumption increases significantly. We often find ourselves rationing available stock among existing customers because we simply cannot raise enough birds to satisfy everyone. Turning away loyal customers is one of the hardest parts of running the business because every missed order represents income we could have earned while strengthening valuable business relationships.

One of our greatest challenges is working capital. Poultry farming requires significant upfront investment before any revenue is generated. Feed, vaccines, veterinary care, bedding materials, electricity, transport, and day-old chicks must all be paid for long before birds are ready for sale. While the business remains profitable, our available cash flow limits the number of production cycles we can operate simultaneously. We have the infrastructure and experience to grow further, but insufficient working capital prevents us from purchasing larger batches of chicks and feed when opportunities arise.

We are now at an important stage in our journey. Several supermarkets and institutional buyers have approached us about long-term supply agreements, but fulfilling those contracts requires larger and more consistent production volumes. Expanding now would allow us to increase revenue while improving food availability within our region. It would also create additional employment opportunities for local residents who are eager to work in agriculture.

We are seeking ZiG 362,000 to strengthen our working capital, increase poultry production, purchase larger batches of day-old chicks and feed, and meet the growing demand from customers across our region.

  • Purchase larger batches of high-quality day-old broiler chicks for multiple production cycles.

  • Buy poultry feed in bulk to reduce unit costs and improve profitability.

  • Secure vaccines, veterinary medicines, vitamins, and biosecurity supplies to maintain healthy flocks.

  • Purchase bedding materials, feeders, drinkers, and replacement farm equipment required for expanded production.

  • Increase cold storage capacity for dressed chickens before distribution.

  • Cover transportation and fuel costs associated with collecting supplies and delivering customer orders.

  • Recruit and train additional farm workers to support larger production volumes.

  • Maintain adequate cash reserves to ensure uninterrupted operations throughout multiple production cycles.

Our implementation plan is straightforward because the farm infrastructure already exists. During the first month after funding, we will purchase additional chicks, feed, and production supplies while recruiting new employees. The following weeks will focus on strengthening flock management, expanding customer deliveries, and preparing additional poultry houses for continuous production. By the third production cycle, we expect to increase output substantially while improving our ability to supply wholesale customers on a consistent schedule.

The impact of this campaign extends well beyond our own family. Purchasing more feed and farming supplies will benefit local agricultural suppliers, while increased production will create dependable markets for supporting businesses throughout our community. Consumers will also benefit from a more reliable supply of fresh poultry products produced locally under responsible farming practices.

We expect this expansion to create at least ten new jobs, including poultry attendants, processing assistants, drivers, cleaners, and administrative staff. Beyond direct employment, the farm will continue supporting transport operators, veterinary professionals, equipment suppliers, and small retailers who work with us throughout the production process. We also hope to provide practical training opportunities for young people interested in commercial poultry farming.

Looking toward the future, I want Chikore Poultry Farm to become one of Zimbabwe's most respected poultry producers while remaining rooted in family values, responsible farming, and community development. Our long-term vision includes establishing a hatchery, expanding into egg production, and investing in renewable energy solutions that make the farm more environmentally sustainable and resilient.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about our story. Every contribution to this campaign represents confidence in hardworking local entrepreneurs who believe agriculture can create lasting opportunities. Your support will allow us to serve more customers, create meaningful employment, and strengthen food production within our community. On behalf of my family, our employees, and the customers who have supported us from the beginning, thank you sincerely for believing in our vision and helping us build a stronger future together.
