Akinyemi Cold Chain Logistics Ltd
Story
My name is Adebayo Akinyemi, and I am the founder of Akinyemi Cold Chain Logistics Ltd, a business dedicated to solving one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria's food supply chain: getting fresh food from farms and producers to consumers before it spoils. While many people think about farming as the backbone of food security, I have come to understand that transportation and cold storage are just as important. Without an efficient cold chain, thousands of tonnes of perfectly good food never make it to market, and farmers lose the income they worked so hard to earn.
My journey into this business began more than a decade ago while working as a transport supervisor for a food distribution company. Every week I watched truckloads of tomatoes, vegetables, dairy products, poultry, and fresh fish arrive at warehouses already beginning to deteriorate because they had traveled for hours in ordinary vehicles under extreme heat. Farmers would often blame transporters, transporters blamed poor roads, and retailers blamed everyone else. Yet the real problem was obvious: very few businesses had access to affordable refrigerated transport.
The situation became even more personal when my older brother, who operates a vegetable farm, lost almost one-third of his harvest during one particularly hot season. He had secured buyers in Lagos willing to pay excellent prices, but by the time the produce arrived, much of it had already spoiled. Watching months of hard work end in financial loss convinced me that food waste was not simply an agricultural problem—it was a logistics problem waiting for someone to solve.
I spent several years researching cold chain operations, speaking with farmers, food processors, wholesalers, supermarket managers, restaurant owners, and fish distributors. Everywhere I went, I heard the same story. Businesses were willing to pay for dependable refrigerated transportation, but the available services were either too expensive, unreliable, or unavailable in many regions.
Four years ago, I decided to take the biggest risk of my life. I resigned from my job, invested my personal savings, sold my family car, and secured a modest loan to purchase one used refrigerated delivery truck. It was not the newest vehicle, and maintaining it was often difficult, but it allowed me to begin building relationships with customers who desperately needed dependable cold chain services.
Those first months were incredibly demanding. I personally handled customer enquiries, scheduled deliveries, loaded products, drove hundreds of kilometres each week, and completed maintenance on the truck whenever it developed faults. There were nights when I slept inside the vehicle while waiting to collect produce from farms before sunrise. Every successful delivery strengthened our reputation, while every satisfied customer recommended our services to someone else.
Today, Akinyemi Cold Chain Logistics Ltd works with poultry farms, dairy producers, seafood suppliers, fruit and vegetable cooperatives, food manufacturers, supermarkets, restaurants, pharmaceutical distributors, and wholesalers throughout several Nigerian states. Our customers trust us because we understand that every hour matters when transporting temperature-sensitive products. Delivering products safely and on time is not just part of our business—it is the reason our business exists.
One of the achievements I am most proud of is the relationships we have built with small-scale farmers. Many farmers previously accepted lower prices from nearby middlemen because transporting fresh produce to larger urban markets was simply too risky. By providing reliable refrigerated transport, we have helped many of these farmers reach customers willing to pay better prices, increasing their incomes while reducing unnecessary food waste.
Unfortunately, demand for our services has now grown beyond our current capacity. We receive transport requests almost every day that we are forced to decline because our existing fleet cannot cover additional routes. During peak harvest seasons, our delivery schedules become fully booked weeks in advance, leaving many farmers and food businesses without access to refrigerated transportation when they need it most.
Perhaps the greatest challenge is that our single refrigerated truck is operating almost continuously. While careful maintenance has kept it reliable, relying on one vehicle creates significant operational risk. If the truck requires repairs, dozens of customers could experience delivery delays. Expanding our fleet is no longer simply about growing revenue—it is about providing a dependable service that customers can confidently rely on throughout the year.
Storage presents another challenge. Many customers have asked us to provide temporary refrigerated warehousing before products are distributed to retailers. Unfortunately, we currently lack modern cold storage facilities, forcing some businesses to seek alternative providers despite preferring to work with us. By combining transportation with cold storage, we can offer a complete logistics solution while significantly reducing food losses across the supply chain.
After carefully evaluating customer demand, financial projections, and future growth opportunities, we have developed an expansion strategy focused on strengthening every stage of our operation. Rather than expanding too quickly, we want to invest in equipment that will improve reliability, increase delivery capacity, and enable us to serve more businesses without compromising service quality.
We are seeking ₦18,500,000 to purchase additional refrigerated trucks, establish a modern cold storage facility, and strengthen the logistics infrastructure needed to serve more businesses across Nigeria. This investment will directly reduce food waste, improve supply chain efficiency, and create lasting value for farmers, retailers, and consumers alike.
The funds raised through this campaign will be invested in the following:
Purchase two modern refrigerated delivery trucks capable of serving multiple delivery routes simultaneously.
Construct and equip a temperature-controlled cold storage warehouse for temporary product storage before distribution.
Install digital temperature monitoring systems that ensure product safety throughout transportation and storage.
Recruit and train additional drivers, warehouse personnel, dispatch coordinators, and refrigeration technicians.
Purchase backup power systems to maintain uninterrupted refrigeration during electricity outages.
Implement fleet management software that improves delivery scheduling, route optimization, and customer communication.
Expand operations into additional agricultural regions where reliable cold chain services remain limited.
The impact of this expansion reaches far beyond our company. Every additional refrigerated vehicle means more farmers can transport produce without suffering devastating post-harvest losses. More reliable cold storage means food processors can operate more efficiently. Retailers receive fresher products with longer shelf life, while consumers enjoy higher quality food at more stable prices. By strengthening the cold chain, we strengthen every business connected to it.
We also expect this expansion to create meaningful employment opportunities in transportation, warehouse management, refrigeration engineering, customer service, administration, and logistics planning. Beyond these direct jobs, the project will indirectly support hundreds of farmers, food processors, wholesalers, restaurants, and retailers who depend on efficient distribution to grow their own businesses.
When I think back to where this journey began—with one ageing refrigerated truck, long nights on unfamiliar roads, and an uncertain future—I am reminded that every successful business begins with someone willing to solve a real problem. We have already demonstrated that reliable cold chain logistics can transform livelihoods. Now we have the opportunity to expand that impact on a much larger scale.
Your support is not simply helping us purchase trucks and refrigeration equipment. You are helping farmers reduce waste, helping businesses grow, helping families access fresher food, and helping build a stronger, more efficient agricultural economy for Nigeria. Every contribution, regardless of size, moves us one step closer to creating a logistics network that benefits everyone involved in the food supply chain.
On behalf of our employees, our customers, our farming partners, and our families, thank you for taking the time to read our story. We are deeply grateful for your encouragement and your belief in our vision. We look forward to building the future of cold chain logistics together.
